I have no idea, maybe because iron is like 100o times more common than copper
Because its cheaper and lasts longer. But they should have used stainless steel, so it doesn't rust and is not magnetic.
Stainless steel however was fairly new at the time, and also it requires other metal like Chrome again, which were also important for the war effort.
