Miraculous island

I came to the island of Tinos without many expectations but it kept surprising me, in the most pleasant and unexpected way. From the beach bar that looked like an art installation, to the village that seemed to belong in another world and all the mesmerising beaches and landscapes in between, I kept wondering why I haven't heard something more about this miraculous island before!

Of course I know the answer to my question and the key word is "miraculous". Tinos is mostly known as a place of pilgrimage for the Greek Orthodox Christians, a religious destination to honour an icon that is considered miraculous and a sacred location. So most of the information I had heard about it were religion orientated, as the other qualities of the island are usually overlooked.

What a shame, I might add, as there are so many more things to see and enjoy on it!

Today I am showing you "Pirgos", the biggest village on the island and one of the most scenic spots of the Aegean sea!

One other thing that I had heard about Tinos, is that it produces excellent marble, famous all over the country. So the "museum of marble crafts" wasn't such a big surprise although the existence of such a museum was a surprise by itself :)

Of course I entered and wandered among old tools, pieces of marble and informational videos. Museums may be often very interesting but they are always, always air-conditioned!

And in a hot summer day, spending some time in a cool environment doesn't hurt :)

I took those pictures on 11/07/2012, when I was working as a photographer for a travel magazine. A job that allowed me to travel all over Greece and see all the places I ever wanted to see and some more that I never imagined I would be interested in (but I enjoyed them anyway).

I am linking below my previous posts about that same trip, in case you missed them and you want to take a look!

How did you manage to pick up a job for a travel magazine? That actually sounds really cool. I've been looking for something similar these days, would be a dream!

Also, visited something much like that museum here in Armenia recently. So astonishing to see such creations in such detail. The beauty of those creations is truly something.

The job wasn't hard to get. I saw an add, I made an appointment, I took the job :)
It was great and I never regret it but it was far from perfect. Long hours, often more than 16 per day, pressure of time to rush from on place to the other and definitely underpaid, are some of the stuff that I try to forget.
You are right though. Getting paid to travel, does sound like a dream :)

Ah yeah that sounds much like the film industry. Just that constant chaos of movement. A whole lot of fun, but also exhausting.

This place is fabulous. We just want to sit and write poetry somewhere in the marble, with a few rays of sunshine on our faces and the sound of the wind in our ears.
But maybe this is the vision of a mild-climate resident and the first thought you would have is to take shelter in the shade, and only then to look after the rest 😁

Anyway, your job was sooo cool. Do you still do this kind of work?

You described perfectly the myth around Greek islands and my job was to "feed" that myth! As every myth, it has elements of truth but it is far from it :)

Getting paid to travel is more than cool, it's a dream coming true but again reality was far from the dream. I never regret taking that job, it was an amazing experience for the years that it lasted but the job itself had many uncool aspects that I am not missing at all!

No, now I am not doing travel photography for a living anymore, unless you call my trips and writing in hive about them, a job :)

I can understand that. Most dream jobs are not so dreamy after long full time contracts. Doing something out of passion is very different from having to work 40 hours a week on it. It's one of the weaknesses of our society I think. Why not hire twice as many people and make them work half as long? For reasons of profitability, of course, but afterwards many of them go into burnout.
In that sense, if writing in hive is a real job, in any case it's much more relaxing and free :)

If our society could function with less coercion and more creativity everything would have been better, education, work, human relations. But unfortunately, the trend is the other way around.

Hive on the other hand, could have been the best job I have ever done indeed, if it could support me financially but it doesn't seem to be the case either. It a great way to make money though :)
