[EN/ES] Let's stop using exchanges as wallets

The biggest flaw that people have when starting in the blockchain world is to think that the exchanges are wallets, getting to save a large amount of tokens due to the convenience provided by the Exchange to receive from any type of network and especially the ease of making changes to other currencies. The problem that many do not observe is that if you keep your money in an Exchange you have no control over that capital, for example, Binance when there is a lot of congestion in a currency can paralyze your deposits and withdrawals for several hours which could prevent you from withdrawing in case of an emergency need.

The most recent example comes from Celsius, a company dedicated to cryptocurrency loans that this Monday, in parallel with the fall of bitcoin, decided to block withdrawals, exchanges and transfers between users within its platform. In addition to making a transfer of 300 million dollars to the FTX Exchange, which raised even more alarms among its users, it may not be anything serious but the simple fact that everything is blocked within its ecosystem and at the same time one of its official wallets makes large movements of capital outflows is not encouraging. To date everything is still locked inside Celsius.

All these events remind us of the famous phrase: If it's not your keys, it's not your money. Which by keys refers to the 12 words that wallets give to recover their content, that is the only way to have a real control over our cryptocurrency funds. It doesn't matter if the software wallet you use disappears because its developer decided to leave the project or if the physical (hardware) wallet you have dies overnight, if you have your 12 recovery words you will be able to restore the funds in another wallet. With a wallet you are the real owner and only responsible for taking care of your money.

It is important to note that you will always get the best security with physical wallets which are the so-called cold wallets, these devices look physically like a pendrive that in some cases can be of a larger size, where its only function is to store cryptocurrencies using its internal software. It is essential to keep their firmware always updated since as vulnerabilities are discovered the company fixes them almost instantly. It is always recommended to purchase these cold wallets from their respective websites to avoid possible manipulation by third parties looking to obtain the 12 recovery words. The two best known brands of cold wallets are Ledger and Trezor.

If you have an important capital to back up a cold wallet is undoubtedly the best investment you can make for your cryptocurrencies. Now if what you want is a software wallet that allows you to store the widest variety of cryptocurrencies while holding the keys to your money then the picture gets a little more complicated due to the number of options available. My advice would be to stay away from MetaMask because of how easy it is to end up losing all your funds if you are not very experienced, for my part to save I am using Trust Wallet which many do not look favorably on because it is from Binance, but I am comfortable with this wallet because in addition to owning my seed phrase it is also open source.

La falla más grande que tienen las personas a la hora de iniciar en el mundo de la blockchain es pensar que los Exchange son billeteras, llegando a guardar gran cantidad tokens debido a la comodidad que brinda el Exchange para recibir desde cualquier tipo de red y sobre todo la facilidad de hacer los cambios a otras monedas. El problema que muchos no observan es que si guardas tu dinero en un Exchange no tienes control alguno sobre ese capital, por ejemplo, Binance cuando hay mucha congestión en una moneda puede paralizar sus depósitos y retiros por varias horas lo que te pudiera impedir retirar ante una necesidad por emergencia.

El ejemplo más reciente lo tenemos de la mano de Celsius, una empresa dedicada a préstamos en criptomonedas que este lunes en paralelo con la caída que tuvo el bitcoin decidió bloquear los retiros, intercambios y transferencias entre usuarios dentro de su plataforma. Además de hacer una transferencia de 300 millones de dólares al Exchange de FTX lo que despertó aún más las alarmas de sus usuarios, puede que no sea nada grave pero el simple hecho de que tenga todo bloqueado dentro de su ecosistema y paralelamente al mismo tiempo una de sus billeteras oficiales realice grandes movimientos de salida de capital no es algo alentador. A la fecha todo sigue bloqueado dentro de Celsius.

Todos estos eventos nos vienen a recordar la famosa frase: Si no son tus llaves, no es tu dinero. La cual por llaves se refiere a las 12 palabras que dan las billeteras para recuperar su contenido, esa es la única forma de tener un verdadero control sobre nuestros fondos en criptomonedas. No importa si la billetera por software que usas desaparece debido a que su desarrollador decidió abandonar el proyecto o si la billetera en físico (Hardware) que tienes muere de un día para otro, si tienes tus 12 palabras de recuperación podrás restaurar los fondos en otra billetera. Con una billetera tu eres el verdadero dueño y único responsable de cuidar tu dinero.

Importante destacar que la mayor seguridad siempre la obtendrás con las billeteras físicas que son las llamadas billeteras frías, estos dispositivos se ven físicamente como un pendrive que en algunos casos puede ser de un mayor tamaño, donde su única función es la de almacenar criptomonedas usando su software interno. Es esencial mantener su firmware siempre actualizado ya que a medida que se descubren vulnerabilidades la empresa los corrige casi que de forma instantánea. Se recomienda siempre adquirir estas billeteras frías en sus respectivas páginas web para evitar la posible manipulación de terceros en busca de obtener las 12 palabras de recuperación. Las dos marcas más conocidas en billeteras frías son Ledger y Trezor.

Si tienes un capital importante que respaldar una billetera fría es sin duda alguna la mejor inversión que puedes hacer por tus criptomonedas. Ahora si lo que deseas es una billetera por software que te permita almacenar la mayor variedad de criptomonedas al mismo tiempo que mantiene las llaves de tu dinero ahí el panorama se complica un poco debido a la cantidad de opciones disponibles. Mi consejo sería mantenerse alejado de MetaMask debido a lo fácil que resulta terminar perdiendo todos los fondos si no tienes mucha experiencia, por mi parte para ahorrar estoy utilizando Trust Wallet que muchos no ven con buenos ojos por ser de Binance, pero yo estoy cómodo con esta billetera ya que además de poseer mi frase semilla también es de código abierto.
