A Boozy Mirage.

As the sun rose on the horizon, it became clear what had happened last night in Aba village and the villagers didn't believe that the whole confusion they were thrown into was for nothing. About 12 hours ago, Ojerinde the greatest hunter in the Village raised an alarm that threw the residents of Aba into confusion.

"They are here! The Agunguns are here!!" A male voice screamed as he ran through the people's hut.

"Isn't that Ojerinde," Romoke asked her husband who just finished dinner.

"He is the one, no other person sounds like that," Akin replied and approached the window to see what was happening.

"Hold on, isn't that Agungun he is screaming?" Romoke asked and immediately fright was written all over her face.

"It can't be, the Agunguns are long gone from our lands," Akin replied sharply and paid attention to Ojerinde again.

"It's the Agungun really, please wake the kids. We have to go into hiding this night before those bastards get to us," Akin told his wife who swung into action immediately.

She woke the kids and they started packing some stuff.

Aba is a small settlement and the people were mostly farmers, they were hardworking and supportive people.

The small settlement was peaceful until a clan called Agungun started raiding them. The Agunguns were a warrior clan and were so powerful that no kingdom could conquer them. Whenever they attacked Aba, they always carted away with their crops and even took the people of Aba as slaves.

After decades of suffering at the hands of the Agunguns, Ojerinde father who was also great hunters came up with a plan to stop the Agunguns and they succeeded, the raiders never stepped on their lands again.

Akin and Romoke went through the backdoor of their house and ran into the woods where other villagers had assembled like their fathers always did before they conquered the Agunguns.

"Where is Ojerinde?" Their chief asked as the villagers gathered.

"We stopped hearing his voice a few minutes ago?" A few villagers chorused and they all went silent.

"I hope the Agunguns haven't caught him," Romoke broke the silence and her words spiked fear in the heart of the villagers.

"If they have caught Ojerinde, we are not safe anymore. We better run into the cave and hide there till daybreak," The chief suggested and they moved together to the cave immediately.

No one had been there in a long time so they moved carefully and hoped no wild animals were waiting to devour them in the cave.

The villagers finally settled in the cave and put their oil lamps at different edges of the cave. The men stood alert while their women attended to the kids who were scared and crying.

It was a long night for the people of Aba as they prayed to see the sunrise again.

"Don't you think we should send someone to check what havoc these people have caused and if it's safe to return to our homes," One of the villagers suggested.

"It's a good idea but I think we should wait here till we are sure that everything is fine out there," The chief replied.

"If that's the case, I will go out to see what's happening in the village," Akin replied.

"No, you can't. I won't be a widow, you aren't going anywhere," Romoke replied him.

They went to one corner of the cave to talk about it but Romoke didn't give consent. The sun was finally up and a few men decided to see what had happened in the village while the rest stayed behind to protect the women and kids.

They moved through the woods and into the village gently to avoid being noticed but everywhere was calm and quiet. There was no sign of attack and the men were confused.

"Probably Ojerinde fought them off," Akin said after a few minutes of checking.

"That might be the case, he has proven himself to be a great warrior like his forefathers," Another man replied.

"But where could Ojerinde be, I hope he is not hurt. It must have been a tough battle and we should have just stayed to fight with him instead of running into hiding," Akin said to the other men and they felt bad.

"Let's split into groups and check around for Ojerinde," The eldest among the men suggested and they divided themselves into groups immediately.

They had barely walked away from each other when they heard a loud snore and it was coming from the back of a huge iroko tree.

The men looked at each other and tipped their toes to see who was making the noise. They eventually surrounded the big tree and were really to pounce on whoever it was but what they saw surprised them, they were speechless for almost a minute and didn't know what to do.

"Ojerinde! Ojerinde!!" Akin called and tapped him severally but it wasn't enough to wake him up.

"Was he beaten with a charm? How can a warrior sleep like this?", Akin muttered.

They tapped him severally again and he eventually woke up. Ojerinde opened his eyes and was surprised to see the men standing in front of him.

"What is happening here and why am I on the floor, under this tree?" He stuttered and his breath stank of alcohol.

"We should ask you, you raised an alarm about the Agunguns last night," Akin replied.

*"Agunguns! Where? When?" Ojerinde sounded surprised.

The men looked at each other and wondered what was wrong with him.

"I was at the palm wine joint earlier and now I am here," I didn't raise any alarm.

The men burst into laughter after realizing that Ojerinde had too much to drink and it messed up with his head. The Agunguns never showed up and the people of Aba were happy to return to their homes. The incident became a joke in Aba even after civilization came.

Oh my goodness 🤭😂, so all the while the villagers were frightened was because of the effect of alcohol on Ojerinde...that's really funny. Imagine how his actions put the villagers under unnecessary pressure all through the night..lol. it's understandable that they acted safe since Agunguns once raided their community with negativities..that was a nice storyline George.
Thanks for participating 😇

Ojerinde actually put the whole village in chaos all because he got drunk. It's hilarious he didn't even have an idea of what happened the previous night.

For certain the tale of Ojerinde's drunken alarm cry will be one that is shared throughout the generations. Everyone will be happy to hear that it was a false alarm so the villagers - their ancestors - were not affected this time.

THe villagers would have been pleased that they could return home and the worst thing that occurred was that Ojerinde drank too much.

They will definitely be happy it was a false alarm and if I had the privilege of more word counts. It would have been more fun to see how Ojerinde reacted when told everything that happened/everything the people of Aba went through that night.

Thanks for the beautiful comment...

Lols I can only laugh at how dumb the villagers would have felt after realising they've ran into hiding out of the comfort of their home into the cave because of a drunken hunter who ought be a brave warrior like his father who fought the Agungun.

Ojerinde deserves 100 strokes of cane after everything he made the villagers go through because of his drunkenness.

Thanks for reading bro.

It's indeed a terrible thing, it's good thing that no life was lost all through the drama.

This is a very funny story. To think the whole village was gripped with fear just because one man decided to drink more than he candle. Nicely written

Ojerinde actually succeeded because the Agunguns were actually their enemies before that time and probably it was one of Ojerinde's fears for him to have screamed about them when he was drunk.

Just imagine the man called Ojerinde. How did he lose guard like that? And here were other people praising his bravery, not knowing that he was enjoying himself under the influence. Really great story, George. You've made me laugh once again.

I am glad you laughed my lady, Ojerinde really loosed guard and put the whole village in chaos. The villagers didn't know what was happening until they found him, one night in the cave isn't too much nah.
