Maracay Shopping Center | Centro Comercial Maracay

I arrived in Maracay in the mid-seventies, by that time the city was beginning to grow rapidly. People from neighboring states found in this capital of Aragüe the right conditions for their development, good educational centers, an offer of affordable housing, good health services, and a pleasant climate where vegetation was important. Maracay was known as the Garden City of Venezuela.

With the increase of the population, commercial activity grew. The change in the use of spaces became evident, especially in the center of the city where numerous family houses were transformed into commercial premises. As part of this urban transformation process, many homes were demolished to make way for the city's first shopping centers.

But these shopping centers were very different from those that came later; they were not large multi-story structures but rather a group of commercial areas, most of them on a single floor.

From that era is the Maracay Shopping Center built in the early seventies. For more than two decades this mall was a reference point when talking about the commercial activity in Maracay. Several reasons made it a very popular place for shoppers.

One of the things that attracted attention was its T-shaped design, with three entrances and exits. At the beginning, the mall consisted of a long corridor that connected two of the main avenues of the center, Miranda and Paéz, through both of which you could enter and exit. This long corridor met with another of lesser length that allowed the entrance through the Pérez Almarza boulevard, a pedestrian walkway that crosses the center of the city in a north-south direction.

The finishes and lighting also attracted a lot of attention. It was one of the first buildings to use marble wall coverings, which combined very well with carefully polished granite floors. The lighting is mixed, a wide ceiling topped by a semi-dome allows air circulation and creates a pleasant atmosphere.

imagen11-550.jpg

In its early days, the shopping center was designed to offer exclusive and high quality products, and was oriented towards an upper middle class clientele. There you could find shoes, textiles and appliances of the best brands in the domestic market, at that time the country had a thriving manufacturing industry and the consumption of domestic goods was very large.

As an anecdote I can tell you that for many years I used to buy all my Mother's Day gifts there. For me it was unthinkable to look for them elsewhere because I knew that in that mall I would always find what I was looking for. My wife has been buying her mother's underwear there for more than thirty years, and it is one of the few places where they still sell the brand my mother-in-law likes.

imagen12-550.jpg

At the time of its construction, the Maracay shopping center was conceived to be visited only by pedestrians, it never had parking areas, this undoubtedly put it at a disadvantage with other shopping centers that incorporated this type of services. Neither did it have recreational areas or food fairs in its beginnings. Its purpose was basically the sale of personal goods and small household appliances.

Later in the eighties, a new wing was built to the mall in which the vertical space was expanded. It went from being a T-shaped structure to a cross-shaped one, in this new wing recreational areas and the food fair were incorporated. There were years in which recreational events were organized for special dates such as Christmas, with the participation of singers, musicians and dancers.

imagen9-550.jpg

The economic crisis experienced in our country since 2016, with a severe devaluation and hyperinflation significantly reduced the activity of the mall, to that was added the pandemic in which commercial activity fell completely. In the last year and a half we have seen a significant recovery of commercial activity in our country.

The photos that I leave in the publication are from a recent visit, I did it on a weekday in the middle of the morning. That day there was a fairly acceptable activity, most of the shops were open. Yes there is a big difference with other times, now the stores do not offer the exclusive merchandise of other times, in most of the stores you can see similar products, most of them imported from China.

imagen7-550.jpg

If you pass through Maracay try to visit this place that is part of the history of the city. There you will be able to see an architectural concept that was innovative for the time of its creation.

Thank you for your time.

I'm glad you liked the publication. Sorry for the delay in responding but in my area I have serious problems with electricity.

I like to publicize the relevant things of the city, I have been able to see part of its evolution and rapid growth. The unfortunate thing is that we have not preserved the buildings of other times. Many of them have been destroyed to build multi-story buildings.

Thank you for the welcome and for your support dear @storiesoferne . A big hug from Maracay.

Hello friend, it is always pleasant to read you, I am glad that you show us this beautiful work. I like it a lot, the food fair, it looks very big and I love the structure of the roof. You're right, those marble walls, they look beautiful with the granite. Greetings!

At the time of construction, the roof was very original, the semi-dome gave light and increased the effect of spaciousness, it was one of the first buildings in the city to use this concept. Thank you very much for stopping by and commenting, dear @doriangel . A big hug from Maracay.

Greetings @irvinc, welcome to the community, thank you very much for sharing your visit to this shopping center that is an important part of the history of Maracay, marble cladding was very fashionable for several years, it was the most requested material in the construction area to give elegance and style to the buildings, the annex of the food fair wing is a breakthrough, shopping centers are focused on offering in addition to the stores and its wide variety of products a special space for gastronomy and fun where family or friends can share.

Have a blessed weekend!

I was encouraged to participate by reading your posts. Before I had not done it because of the language issue, some communities do not like the use of the translator, but I saw that here it was not a problem.

In the city there are several small shopping centers like that, at that time the important thing was to concentrate in one area the commercial spaces, the recreation was not taken into account, now the concept is more comprehensive.

Thank you very much for stopping by and for your support, dear @belkyscabrera . A big hug from Maracay.

It turns out that several central markets that have been built for a long time are almost the same in several countries, I see the classic design of this building is similar to one of the central markets in my area. I wondered why it wasn't rebuilt to make it more attractive, but it turns out that a building like that is worth maintaining because it has historical value.

There are few spaces that are preserved here with this design, they are not as attractive as the big malls, but they do have historical value.
