I spotted the statue of the Amazon from afar when I arrived in Benin in February as we drove past it. Seeing such a beautiful statue, I knew I am to make up time for a visit.

Several times I have passed the statue on my way and back from Cotonou but I didn't want to briefly stop I want to visit when I am in no rush, so today with the weather fine for outdoors I went photo hunting starting with the longest graffiti mural in Africa which I will be sharing in series.

Statue of The Amazon

Only now that I know the history behind the Statue of the Amazon, I was wondering why it is called Amazon, so when I read up on it below is what I found.

Today, one cannot tell the story of the kingdom of Danxomè, now Benin, without mentioning the Amazons. These courageous women, who at the cost of their lives had defended their native land, remain engraved in the memory of the Beninese. Warriors in every respect, the Amazons of Danxomè are revered for their valour in the face of opposing soldiers in pre-colonial times. Created by her royal highness Tassi Hangbé, this female military elite was then rehabilitated, improved and established by his majesty King Guézo, in 1820, to become a special elite corps, responsible for defending the sovereign and his kingdom.
Source

You might want to read up more by following the linked source. The statue is 30 meters in height and made of bronze, from what I have gathered each time I pass by, it looks to be an attractive spot for tourists and locals.

20230617_134704.jpg

I translated the above from French to English as seen below

symbol of our love and our commitment for the country, now amazons knew, by their bravery, as much as the men, to save the fatherland.
Like our Amazons, the Beninese woman is our pride.

As I approached the statue after taking photos of the graffiti wall.

I like the greenery, it gives the surrounding a beautiful look.

It is a beautiful, I love the weather, just the kind of weather I won't be nagging about.

20230617_134425.jpg

I had to get my face in as well, who goes to see Tassi Hangbé without taking a selfie with her?

It was around 14:00 by now the sun was getting to me so I headed home but it was nothing short of fun. I enjoyed every bit of me going out there today.

Glad you did today. It shows you like photographing… keep going 😎

I think you need to post directly in the community. As I have never seen any other ways.
Tomorrow will be the result from the last week winners and the start of the new week #149. You reply in that StreetArt post, where you place the link to your post and the photo you want to be judged. Most of the time also the first photo. You tell that too in your post. You have a week to enter 😎 should be time enough for you.

I know the feeling of discovering new things 🤩
Thank you kindly Joe

Now you're beginning to bring out the photographer in you hahaha. Beautiful, beautiful. The angles you took them were very great and the shots upclose and distant created a contrast as well. If it were in Nigeria, area boys would have started looking for ways to collect money from you for taking a picture

Lol thanks, bro, I am beginning to enjoy photography again.
People were just going on about their business as I focus on the photos, lol it will be an ugly experience to be money because I am taking photos.
I know how rough "area boys" can get, I saw them in action those days in Nigeria.

Very cool pic bro. I love Benin and it's culture. The Vodoun Capital of Africa! Powerful country that. The knowledge there will help save Africa one day.

The country is small but has the potential to be great, it seems to be doing fairly okay and you seem to know about Benin based on your comment. Are you from Benin?

Not in this lifetime maybe a previous one. I'm from Barbados in the Caribbean, one of the first countries you will arrive in when you leave west Africa. So maybe I could've been one who left Benin in those times and my spirit is leading me back there. I research about that country from since I was a teen. And at this moment, i'm closer to returning to Benin than ever, I'm in Tanzania east Africa right now. Been here for 3 years now.

Wow, interesting, I have always loved the Caribbean and even Tanzania, there is something with me about coastal countries, I just love them for someone who can't swim. If I have my way I will like to visit Zanzibar someday, from what I have seen I like the white sand beaches over there.

Similarly, like you wanting to return to Benin, I returned to Benin recently from South Africa. I am partly Nigerian and Benin, so I opted for Benin. I just love how peaceful the country is, simple life , safe and everyone minding their business, I wish it is economically bigger though. Give us a shout when you find your way to Benin there are two Hivers from Benin myself and @oadissin 😃

That's a beautiful statue. I was wondering what it's made of, and you mentioned later that it's made of bronze.

Wait a minute Joe...., is this the woman warrior who inspired "The Woman King" Movie which is based on Dahomey kingdom? I watched the movie early this year and If this is the same woman warrior from the movie who led the Agojie, then wow, the history behind this statue is impressive.

Thanks, Humbe 😉

I have not seen the movie but since you mentioned Dahomey it is most likely she is the woman warrior because Benin was initially called Dahomey. From what I read briefly she was a queen, so it probably makes sense why the movie is titled "The Woman King" I should check it out.

Oh yeah you should check it out. The movie trended for sometime in South Africa because it had the South African Actor Thuso Mbedu who was acting along Viola Davis- quite a huge career breakthrough for her.

The movie setting is great and have some similarities to the history you described there! Looking at this statue, hmmm now I see why those woman had to literally train for hours in real world to match up the fitness and posture. Their fitness level made me love the movie more!

I should go watch the movie! I will have to download it when am close to my monthly data finishing.

Tassi is a legend indeed, I am familiar with the name, I know some that bear Tassi in Benin while growing up so I find it easier to connect with the name.
Thanks. It was truly nice weather for me to be out there at noon without nagging.

Oh wow, marvelous photography, the pictures are looking amazing. I definitely love the history behind it all; brave woman ready to protect what's rightfully hers no matter what. Tassi Hangbé, has been immortalized forever in this gigantic sculpture. The greenery and beautiful surroundings make it worth visiting.

It's incredible! Wow! It looks enormous! Is it covered in bronze? Or completely made of bronze?

It is made of bronze, it reminds me of the Mandela statue in Sandton.

Good heavens that's awesome. You know, I was born in Sandton but I've never seen that statue. I've lived my whole life in Cape Town. I did get to meet Mandela in real life though, which was just phenomenal.

Lol me and the iconic statues I like selfies with them, I was working at the Sandtongate on this day so I got myself a selfie with him.

Wow, having to meet him in person should be a wonderful and special feeling, the closest I got was driving past his house on Qunu lol, he was late then though.
