Observations from Bangkok: Siam Paragon Mall and Chinatown

Hi dear reader. I have been in Thailand for a month now and I haven't gotten used to the high humidity yet. I guess the locals do not spend as much time outside as possible. This is one of the things that caught my attention. Thailand does not leave many options to escape from the high heat. Air conditioners are running in every indoor environment at maximum cold temperature and I guess this does not affect people negatively. People who are allergic to weather changes should be a bit more careful.

On weekdays I do not have much time to spend outside during the day. If I wake up early, I try to have breakfast until noon and walk around as much as possible in the daylight to explore. When I am done, if I still have energy, I look for new places for a burger and beer. One of the places I want to talk about today is Paragon Mall in Siam district.

Siam Paragon Mall,nestled at the heart of vibrant Bangkok, stands as a true location of retail and luxury, a paradise for both avid shoppers and cultural enthusiasts. At the same time, it is a realm of culinary delights, hosting a diverse array of gourmet restaurants and trendy cafes, each tempting the palate with exquisite flavors. I think that this multifaceted place captures the essence of Bangkok's cosmopolitan spirit..

The Gundam Base like a spot for anime enthusiasts and mechanics fans alike. This place is coming from influence of Japanese pop culture. I am not someone who follows anime, but am sure it is very interesting for those who are interested. As you step into the Gundam Base, you will be greeted by an immersive world of intricate model kits and a diverse array of Gundam merchandise. This Base in Siam Paragon Mall transforms shopping into an adventure.

As I was walking around inside, I came across a work of colorful pixels. Everyone was standing in front of this screen watching the flow of colors. I realize that it does not stand out in the photo, but when you see it live, it is obvious that it was created with a really special technique.

I think the most similar feature of Bangkok to Istanbul is the endless traffic and the honking horns. Add TukTuks into this traffic and you have chaos :)) It shouldn't be hard to guess why motorcycling is so widespread, right? Actually, horns here are not merely a means of expressing chaos. They are a form of communication each other.

If you've been to Bangkok before, or if you've done some research on the place, you've surely seen the name Soi Cowboy. During the day there is no activity here, but at night it becomes one of the most popular destinations for tourists. It is renowned for its array of go-go bars, lively nightclubs, and a lively atmosphere that thrives well into the early hours. Anyway, I do not want to go into too much detail about this place (:

Actually, one of the places I want to talk about is Chinatown. When I checked on Google Maps, it's within walking distance. I continue on my way on foot, not caring that it is hot. Of course, I don not forget to take silly and random photos while walkin :)

When I approach Chinatown, I encounter a very different atmosphere. It is a bustling enclave that having a unique energy and cultural vibrancy. As you step into its labyrinthine alleys, you're enveloped in a sensory symphony of aromas, flavors, and colors. The streets are lined with ornate archways, traditional storefronts, and vibrant market stalls. From bustling markets selling everything from exotic spices to intricate handicrafts, to the street food vendors offering an array of treats, Chinatown is a feast for human senses.Sure, if you are used to these spices before :)

As day transitions to night, the area transforms into a bustling culinary haven, with neon lights illuminating the thoroughfares and a local restaurants offering a tantalizing variety of dishes. I also met a lot of fruit sellers while walking around here. But at first I had no idea what most fruits were. I have to say that some of them are really bad :)

The more I wander around, the hungrier I get. With hundreds of restaurants around me, it's really hard to decide what to eat. I look at the menus of the restaurants and 95% of the time I come across foods I have never tried before. Even if I have tried it before and have an idea about this dish, there can be different spices in the dish. It is really a gamble.

Seafood is widely consumed in South East Asia and locals will eat anything that comes out of the sea alive. Crab, shrimp and lobster are available in my country of origin, Turkiye, but they are not foods that are frequently consumed in daily life. They are usually consumed as an appetizer with alcoholic drinks in Turkiye.

I have been walking around for hours and still have nott decided what to eat. Now I have to take all the risks and find a place :) When I check the map, I see that there is a cafe called White Dragon in a back alley and the menu has options that I think I might be used to. I change direction without wasting any more time.

Meanwhile, motorcycle drivers are waiting at a red light. Btw, this photo has become my favorite photo. I will use it as the cover photo. Maybe because there was a stability in this mobility, it created a different atmosphere.

And... I am finally here. It is a nice place that stands out with its desserts and drinks. I see many teas on the menu such as white dragon, rosie lychee, peach blossom. I am going with white dragon tea. I chose something with cheddar and bacon in it. It was delicious. I think I won the gamble :))

Chinatown was a adventure that offers a different glimpse into the Bangkok's essence. Although I was indecisive about the food, I'm sure that over time you realize that there are dishes that you like as much as you dislike. By the way, realizing that I am not an active Hive user, I am also writing this to remember the stories when I read these articles in a few years. I hope to become an active Hive user one day :)

Merhaba. Bir aydır Tayland'dayım ve yüksek neme henüz alışamadım. Yerliler mümkün olduğunca dışarıda vakit geçirmiyor sanırım. Dikkatimi çeken şeylerden biri oldu. Tayland, yüksek sıcaklardan kaçmak için pek fazla seçenek bırakmıyor. Klimalar her kapalı ortamda maksimum soğukta çalışıyor ve bu durum insanları olumsuz etkilemiyor sanırım. Hava değişikliklerine alerjisi olan kişilerin biraz daha dikkatli olması gerekiyor.

Hafta içi gün içinde dışarıda harcayacak pek zamanım olmuyor. Erken uyanırsam öğlene kadar kahvaltı etmeye çalııyorum ve etrafı keşfetmek için mümkün olduğunca gün ışığında dolaşıyorum. İşim bittiğinde, hala enerjim varsa, hamburger ve bira için yeni yerler arıyorum. Bugün bahsetmek istediğim yerlerden biri de Siam bölgesindeki Paragon Mall.

Bangkok'un kalbinde yer alan Siam Paragon, hem alışveriş tutkunları hem de kültür meraklıları için bir cennet olan gerçek bir perakende ve lüks konumu gibi duruyor. Aynı zamanda, her biri enfes lezzetlerle damakları cezbeden çok çeşitli gurme restoranlara ve trend kafelere ev sahipliği yapan bir lezzetler diyarı. Bence bu çok yönlü yer, Bangkok'un kozmopolit ruhunun özünü yakalıyor.

Gundam Base, hem anime meraklıları hem de mekanik hayranları için bir yer gibi. Burası Japon pop kültürünün etkisinden geliyor. Anime takip eden biri değilim ama eminim ilgilenenler için çok ilgi çekicidir. Gundam Base'e adım attığınızda, karmaşık model kitlerinin sürükleyici bir dünyası ve çok çeşitli Gundam ürünleri tarafından karşılanacaksınız. Siam Paragon Mall'daki bu yer, alışverişi bir maceraya dönüştürüyor bence.

İçeride dolaşırken renkli piksellerden oluşan bir çalışmayla karşılaştım. Herkes bu ekranın önünde durmuş renklerin akışını izliyordu. Fotoğrafta pek göze ilgi çekici gelmediğinin farkındayım ama canlı görünce gerçekten özel bir teknikle yaratıldığı anlaşılıyor.

Bangkok'un İstanbul'a en çok benzeyen özelliği sanırım bitmek bilmeyen trafiği ve korna çalması. Bu trafiğe TukTukları da eklerseniz kaos oraya çıkıyor. Motosiklet kullanımının neden bu kadar yaygın olduğunu tahmin etmek zor olmasa gerek değil mi? Aslında kornalar burada sadece kaosu ifade etmenin bir yolu değildir. Birbirleriyle bir iletişim şekli.

Daha önce Bangkok'a gittiyseniz veya burası hakkında biraz araştırma yaptıysanız, Soi Cowboy adını mutlaka görmüşsünüzdür. Gündüzleri burada bir aktivite yok ama geceleri turistlerin en popüler destinasyonlarından biri haline geliyor. Go-go barları, hareketli gece kulüpleri ve sabahın erken saatlerine kadar canlı bir atmosfere sahip olmasıyla ünlü.

Aslında bahsetmek istediğim yerlerden biri de Chinatown. Goggle Maps'te kontrol ettiğimde, yürüme mesafesinde. Havanın sıcak olmasına aldırmadan yoluma yürüyerek devam ediyorum. Yürürken saçma sapan ve rastgele fotoğraflar çekmeyi de ihmal etmiyorum tabii.

Chinatown'a yaklaştığımda çok farklı bir atmosferle karşılaşıyorum. Eşsiz bir enerjiye ve kültürel canlılığa sahip, hareketli bir yerleşim bölgesi. Labirenti andıran ara sokaklarına adım attığınızda, aromaların, tatların ve renklerin duyusal bir senfonisine kapılıyorsunuz. Sokaklar süslü kemerler, geleneksel vitrinler ve canlı pazar tezgahlarıyla kaplı. Egzotik baharatlardan incelikli el sanatlarına kadar her şeyin satıldığı hareketli pazarlardan, çeşitli ikramlar sunan sokak gıda satıcılarına kadar, Chinatown insan duyuları için bir şölen gibi. Elbette, daha önce bu baharatlara alışkınsanız.

Hava kararırken, caddeleri aydınlatan neon ışıklar ve cezbedici çeşitlilikte yemekler sunan yerel restoranlarla bölge hareketli bir mutfak cennetine dönüşüyor. Burada dolaşırken bir çok manavla da karşılaştım. Ama ilk başta çoğu meyvenin ne olduğu hakkında hiçbir fikrim yoktu. Bazılarının gerçekten kötü olduğunu söylemeliyim :)

Etrafta dolaştıkça daha fazla acıkıyorum. Belki de yüzlerce restoran varken ne yiyeceğime karar vermek gerçekten zor. Restoranların menülerine bakıyorum ve %95 daha önce hiç denemediğim yiyeceklerle karşılaşıyorum. Daha önce denemiş olsam ve bu yemek hakkında fikir sahibi olsam da yemeğin içinde farklı baharatlar olabiliyor. Bu gerçekten bir kumar gibi.

Deniz ürünleri Güneydoğu Asya'da yaygın olarak tüketiliyor ve yerel halk neredeyse denizden çıkan her şeyi yiyor. Yengeç, karides ve ıstakoz Türkiye'de de tüketiliyor fakat bunlar günlük hayatta çok sık tüketilen ürünler değil. Türkiye'de genellikle alkollü içeceklerin yanında meze olarak tüketilirler.

Saatlerdir etrafta dolaşıyorum ve hala ne yiyeceğime karar veremedim. Şimdi tüm riskleri alıp bir yer bulmalıyım. Haritayı kontrol ettiğimde bir arka sokakta White Dragon diye bir kafe olduğunu görüyorum ve menüde alışık olabileceğimi düşündüğüm seçenekler var. Daha fazla vakit kaybetmeden yön değiştiriyorum.

Bu sırada motosiklet sürücüleri kırmızı ışıkta bekliyor. Bu arada, bu fotoğraf benim favori fotoğrafım oldu. Kapak fotoğrafı olarak kullanacağım. Belki de bu hareketlilikte bir istikrar olduğu için farklı bir hava yarattı.

Sonunda geldim. Tatlıları ve içecekleriyle ön plana çıkan güzel bir mekan. Menüde white dragon, osie lychee, peach blossom gibi birçok çay görüyorum. White dragon çayını seçiyorum. İçinde çedar ve pastırma olan bir şey seçtim. Lezzetliydi. Sanırım kumarı kazandım.

Chinatown, Bangkok'un özüne farklı bir bakış sunan bir maceraydı. Yemek konusunda kararsız olsam da eminim zamanla sevmediğiniz kadar sevdiğiniz yemeklerin de olduğunu fark etmişsinizdir. Bu arada aktif bir Hive kullanıcısı olmadığımın farkında olarak, birkaç yıl sonra bu yazıları okuduğumda hikayeleri hatırlamak için de yazıyorum. Umarım bir gün aktif bir Hive kullanıcısı olurum :)
