I visited The Black Virgin of Montalban (ESP/ENG)
Hello my dear friends, this is my first time posting content in this community, so I want to share with you the emotion that overwhelms me the fact of having been able to visit this weekend the town of my father, the same one in which I grew up the first eight years of my life, today I want to show you the greatest pride that keeps the church of the Immaculate Conception, it is the image of the Virgin of Atocha, curious image because it is the only image of the black virgin in the entire national territory, so today I will be sharing with you part of its history while you join me to take a look at the beautiful temple.
Hola mis queridos amigos, esta es mi primera vez publicando contenido en esta comunidad, así que quiero compartir con ustedes la emoción que me embarga el hecho de haber podido visitar este fin de semana el pueblo de mi papá, el mismo en el que crecí los primeros ocho años de mi vida, hoy quiero mostrarles el mayor orgullo que guarda la iglesia de la inmaculada concepción, se trata de la imagen de la virgen de Atocha, imagen curiosa porque se trata de única imagen de la virgen negra en todo el territorio nacional, así que hoy estaré compartiendo con ustedes parte de su historia mientras me acompañan a darle un vistazo al hermoso templo.
Although the church is quite neglected on the outside, lacking a bit of paint and general maintenance, inside it is quite well preserved, with its colonial style, its impeccable wooden pews and its striking chandeliers.
A pesar de que por fuera la iglesia está bastante descuidada, le falta un poco de pintura y mantenimiento en general, por dentro se conserva bastante bien, con su estilo colonial, sus bancos de madera impecables y sus candiles llamativos
But what immediately catches the eye is the statuette of the Virgin of Atocha, also called the black virgin of Montalbán.
Pero lo que llama la atención enseguida es la imagen de la Virgen de Atocha, también llamada virgen negra de Montalbán.
The origin of this Marian invocation lies in Spain, when the Moorish invasion arose. At that time there was an statuette of the virgin on the outskirts of the Spanish capital that the locals wanted to protect from the invading hordes, so they walled her in her niche. Three centuries later, after the expulsion of the invaders, they rescued the statuette of the virgin from the wall, but everyone was very surprised to discover that an oil lamp that a devotee had put there before walling up the image as thanks for a favor received, was still burning and the smut of the smoke had darkened the skin of the statuette of the virgin and the child she carries in her arms, although it had not darkened the heart she holds in her hand nor the world the child carries in his.
El origen de esta advocación mariana radica en España, cuando surgió la invasión de los moros. En ese tiempo había una imagen de la virgen en las afueras de la capital española que los lugareños querían proteger de las hordas invasoras, así que la emparedaron en su mismo nicho. Tres siglos después, tras la expulsión de los invasores, rescataron de la pared la imagen de la virgen, pero todos se llevaron una gran sorpresa al descubrir que una lámpara de aceite que una devota había puesto allí antes de emparedar la imagen como agradecimiento por un favor recibido, todavía estaba encendida y el tizne del humo había oscurecido la piel de la imagen de la virgen y el niño que ella lleva en sus brazos, aunque no había oscurecido el corazón que ella tiene en la mano ni el mundo que el niño lleva en la suya.
But what connection does this story have with Montalbán and the history of its black virgin? Very simple, in the middle of the XIX century in Venezuela the Federal War broke out, and General Juan Crisóstomo Falcón came to the town of Montalbán to recruit young men, he needed five hundred men to form his army, then one of them, Andrés Pérez Ortega, son of Commander Andrés Pérez, volunteered to defend the government of the President Designate Dr. Pedro Gual.
¿Pero qué conexión tiene esta historia con Montalbán y la historia de su virgen negra? Pues muy simple, en pleno siglo XIX en Venezuela surgió la Guerra Federal, y al pueblo de Montalbán llegó el General Juan Crisóstomo Falcón para reclutar jóvenes, necesitaba quinientos hombres para formar su ejército, entonces uno de ellos, Andrés Pérez Ortega, hijo del Comandante Andrés Pérez, se ofrece como voluntario para defender el gobierno del Presidente Designado doctor Pedro Gual.
The parents and brothers of the young man knelt before a painting of the black virgin and prayed for the boy to return home safe and sound, then they promised the virgin that if that happened, they would donate an statuette of her to the church of the town, and the miracle happened, the young Andrés returned from the war completely unharmed, and therefore the Pérez Ortega family had an statuette of the black virgin brought directly from Spain and donated it to the church of Montalbán in 1874, as part of the promise, it was tradition that the women of the family gave their wedding dresses to dress the statuette of the virgin.
Los padres y los hermanos del joven se hincaban ante una pintura de la virgen negra y rogaban para que el muchacho regresara a casa sano y salvo, entonces le prometen a la virgen que si eso sucede, ellos se encargarían de donar una imagen suya a la iglesia del pueblo, y el milagro ocurrió, el joven Andrés regresó de la guerra completamente ileso, y por lo tanto la familia Pérez Ortega hizo traer directamente desde España una imagen de la virgen negra que donó a la iglesia de Montalbán en 1874, como parte de la promesa, era tradición que las mujeres de la familia entregaran sus trajes de novia para vestir la imagen de la virgen.
Before the statuette was in a more accessible niche, near the main entrance and lower. I expected to find it there to take better pictures but I realized that it had been moved to a higher niche and farther away from the entrance, I guess the people in charge of the church wanted it to be more protected, not only for its sentimental and religious value, but also for its historical value.
Antes la imagen estaba en un nicho más accesible, cerca de la entrada principal y más bajo. Yo esperé encontrarla ahí para tomar mejores fotografías pero me di cuenta de que la habían pasado a un nicho más alto y alejado de la entrada, supongo que los encargados de la iglesia quisieron que estuviera más protegida, no solo por su valor sentimental y religioso, sino por su valor histórico.
Another thing that caught my attention was the spiral staircase, made of wood, it is beautiful, very ornate and somehow reminds me of the one in the church of Loreto in the United States, a very particular staircase for its history, I invite you to investigate about it, although this staircase of the church of Montalbán is more modest and narrow.
Otra de las cosas que llamó mi atención fue la escalera de caracol, hecha en madera, es bellísima, muy ornamentada y de cierta forma me recuerda a la que está en la iglesia de Loreto en Estados Unidos, una escalera muy particular por su historia, los invito a investigar sobre ella, aunque esta escalera de la iglesia de Montalbán es más modesta y delgada.
