Finally The Cauliflower is Flowering

The moment I’ve been waiting for has finally arrived; the cauliflower I’ve been tending to for nearly three months is starting to show results. Early last month, I posted an update on my mini-garden—which you can view here. At that time, the cauliflower hadn't shown any signs of progress. Only the stalks were growing taller, and I was actually feeling pessimistic about this particular plant. After all, cauliflower is typically grown in cool, mountainous highlands.

Since this was my first time growing it, I felt it deserved its own dedicated post—and that is exactly why I’m writing this now; it represents a success for me. You’ll have to stay tuned for the eventual harvest!

Nurturing this plant from seed to the flowering stage has been a remarkable achievement in my life. Honestly, I grew it relying solely on organic kitchen waste, making the best use of what I had.

For the growing medium, I simply mixed in dried leaf litter and soil from my mother's duck coop. Beyond that, I relied on kitchen scraps—everything from rice-washing water and onion skins to other organic waste.

I took these photos a week ago, just as the cauliflower began to form its head. At first, the bud was tiny, and I was afraid to touch it; newly emerging cauliflower heads are usually very sensitive to handling. I waited until it had grown a bit larger—about three days later—before capturing the images.

A week later, the head has grown significantly, and I am thrilled to see it thriving. Although I only have four of these plants, I feel the yield will be more than enough when harvest time comes.

I still have a lot to learn about caring for cauliflower at this flowering stage; I’ve noticed some black spots on the surface of the head. I’m not entirely sure what causes this, but I plan to keep researching proper maintenance for growing cauliflower online. I’ve noticed that my cauliflower has been growing faster lately—likely due to the frequent afternoon rains we’ve been having. As a result, the plants in my mini-garden are thriving.
