Harvesting Tomatoes and Chili Peppers in the Mini My Garden
My mini garden is starting to yield a harvest—though it’s not much, and it takes time to patiently wait for the plants to grow—but I’m so happy to be able to grow something useful for the kitchen. Tomatoes and chili peppers are two kitchen staples I use almost every day.
These two plants are the kitchen staples I never skip when making sambal and various stir-fried vegetables. I’ve read in several books that if you want to start gardening, you should begin with tomatoes, because they’re the easiest plants to grow and care for. That’s why I was so determined back then to sow the seeds and nurture them until they turned out like this.
It all started when I asked a vegetable vendor at the market for some rotten tomatoes, and from there I tried sowing them from seed. I watched over them lovingly every hour—just as I love to do when gardening—because it’s such a great way to relieve excess stress.
This harvest was decent, but unfortunately the tomatoes weren’t very big—even though this variety usually grows larger. I’m not entirely sure why, since I’m still learning how to grow them. I think the main reason is that I planted them very close to the cayenne pepper plants. It was a risky decision I made when my plot was still very small, and now I have to provide more nutrients for my plants.
So that morning, when the weather was just perfect, I picked them slowly and simply by hand. I don’t have special shears yet, but I figured this simple harvesting method is definitely better than nothing, right?.
It’s not just the tomatoes that have been planted and are bearing fruit—I also have many new tomato plants that are starting to grow slowly but very well. They’re already a month old—their growth is pretty fast, in my opinion, even though I originally planted them when they were just a week old and the tomatoes were still very small; I immediately transplanted them all.
I know you have a lot of experience with gardening, but one thing I really love about gardening is, yeah, harvests like this. That’s why I’m taking the liberty of sharing just a little bit about my garden’s harvest.
I love the world of gardening so much because, as you know, cooking with produce from your own garden brings so much more joy—and of course, the plants are free from chemical pesticides. Those chillies look so good. Which species?
We call it curly red chili; I’m not exactly sure what variety it is, because I grew it from seeds that came from kitchen scraps left over from cooking.
Your tomatoes has pretty shape, looks healthy too, and the chili are so long, omg. I'm furious how spicy they are, from 1 to 10, how's u rate their spiciness?
Having your own plants that is really useful in the kitchen is really cool no? U plant them, take care of them, and late on harvest them too, thats the most exciting part of them all. Ours is really mini too and we're always grateful to what we can get there ♪ \(^ω^\ )
I really love the shape of these—here we call them “pumpkin tomatoes.” They’re so beautiful and grow very well, though the fruits aren’t very big.
The chili peppers are spicy, and I’d rate their heat level at about an 8—though there are even spicier varieties out there.
