My Splinterlands journey - From Zero to Hero - by @pero82

Hello everyone! Pozdrav svima!
Let me tell you a story of how I became a hardcore Splinterlands player, how did I start and what challenges I had to overcome to get here where I am now - totally immersed into Splinterverse (the whole Splinterlands universe, the game and the game behind the game).

First time I ever heard of Splinterlands was about two years ago, when I read an article about play and earn games - games where you can earn real money (more precisely crypto) while playing! I've known about that concept from before, but it was usually some poorly made games, with bad UI or boring gameplay.
But when I saw the screenshots from Splinterlands it got me intrigued, so I went to the website and literally got sucked in into the Splinterverse. Funniest thing is, I never played any card games before, so I didn't know what to expect. I played a couple of games, and of course I lost them all, but I was thrilled with the whole game concept so I dug in deeper.
I searched online for some tutorials, advices, beginner guides - and found some amazing content creators on YouTube, but the ones whose videos helped me the most were @luke-wtp and @bulldog1205, because they had just what I needed at that moment. Advices how to start playing, what cards to rent and what was the current meta.

Those videos are now outdated, but you can find a lot of new YouTube videos and Twitch streamers that can help you with current meta.

I started really slowly, I bought the Spellbook got the credits and rented some of the suggested cards. After some time, and with the help of mentioned videos I broke out of Bronze and started playing in Silver.

I played in Silver for a year, renting cards I need, managing with reward cards I got. But then I said to myself, it's time to step up to the Gold league! I rented Gold league level cards and realized that in the long run, it's better to own the cards then to deal with the stress of renting cards all the time.

The timing was perfect, market was low, so I bought the whole Chaos Legion set, card by card, up to Gold level. I started with the Rare summoners, then Common monsters and worked my way to Legendary monsters and finally Legendary summoners.

But that wasn't enough, I'm in the process of completing my Riftwatchers set, and I'm already planning my way into the Rebellion set! VONAK!

Splinterlands took over my life, I breath and live Splinterlands. If you ask my wife I spend too much time on this game, but if you ask me - not enough. 😆
I came to Splinterlands because of the gameplay, but stayed because of the whole world behind it.
I usually play two, three hours of battles, depending if I have a Brawl or some Tournaments going on, but then I spend even more time checking cards on market, planning what should I buy next, reorganizing my land plots, reading Hive posts, making Hive posts. It's amazing how much there is to do out there, besides the game alone.
And now my 2nd Splinterlands birthday is coming up soon, I wonder what will I gift myself for it? Some Rebellion legendary card maybe? 😍

I play in Gold league, regularly finish in Diamond rating, then on last day of the season I advance to Diamond so I play for Diamond season chests the following season.
I even managed to finish in the leaderboard position a couple of times, but that's a whole other world. It is very competitive and stressful, so I wouldn't recommend it to beginners.
If you really want to know how a typical season of a hardcore Splinterlands player looks like, you can check out any of my Hive blog posts named Season Report like this newest one.

Tournaments and Brawls are where the biggest fun is. I try to participate in as many Tournaments I can, because they reward players with awesome rewards, in-game currencies, card packs and stuff you can use to even more progress in the game. Rewards are distributed depending on your final standing, so very often I end up with quite a profit. But be careful, those tournaments are extremely competitive so I advise to first master the ranked play and then dive into tournaments.
Brawls are also very competitive part of the game, especially when you're in a Tier 4 guild like I am. You play against the very best players in the game and every little mistake can result in a loss.
Brawls yield SPS and Merits rewards, as well as Crowns:
- Merits are used for purchasing Gladiator packs that contain Gladiator cards, special soulbound cards that can be used only in Brawl battles or with special rulesets/summoners in Ranked battles.
- Crowns are used for upgrading Guild buildings that give you different bonuses for ranked or brawl battles - so you have a game within the game.

It is by far the best part of the game for me, because you get the feeling of being a part of something greater then yourself. You come together with people from all around the world, all great players, and you don't play for your personal gain, but for the betterment of your guild.
I advise every player to join a guild as soon as possible and start playing Brawls and earning Merits as it is a vital part of the game.

Upcoming Land release is also one thing that gets me excited as I managed to acquire six plots and I can't wait to start playing around with that. I got my worker cards almost ready and

It is going to be very interesting to see what different strategies players will go for when working their land plots. And even more interesting when Land expansion reaches final release version, because there will be so much to do there, it will be like a whole new game.

My current goals in Splinterlands are (sorted by priority, ofc):
- Help my guild reach greatness and become a Tier 5 guild
- Get my staked SPS to 100k - not an easy goal, but definitely doable, it will just take some time.
- Complete my Riftwatchers card set and start acquiring Rebellion packs (and cards)
- Organize my Land plots so I can get a steady DEC income which will help me in completing previously mentioned goal

I haven't given myself a time frame for these goals, but the sooner the better, that's always been my moto.

As you can see, I'm still a long way from my 100k SPS goal, but considering where I was this time last year, it's going up rapidly.

And finally, what advice can I give you - a new player, stepping into the world of Splinterlands, the Splinterverse?
Don't treat Splinterlands like any other game - it's not just a game, it's a world of possibilities.
Start with Ranked battles, learn to play the game, don't get discouraged if you can't win. Learn from your losses, and if you can't, just ask someone, anyone. This whole community is full of people willing to help.
Best way to reach out to other people is if you join Splinterlands Discord server. That's what I did back when I just started and it was the biggest stepping stone on my road to success.
Another great advice I can give you is - rent cards, learn to play with them, before you decide which ones you want to buy. This is another great feature of this game - you can try before you buy. But remember, in the long run, it is better to own the cards then to constantly rent them.
And finally, join the Hive blog and write about your game progress there, you can be rewarded for it, and you will find new people who share your interest and can help you in many ways.
