Hive Is Not Democracy, But... .:. Late Night Blogging

I'm sorry if you thought that the governance part of the HIVE blockchain is a democracy, but that's not that bad to acknowledge... Especially if we know how "so-called" democratic countries are doing at the moment... Anyways, it's not that important if it is or it's not, it is important to know what you can do and how you can participate in the governance...

In the beginning, let us try to compare things from real life and our beloved HIVE... In a democratic society we pick the people (politicians) who will rule over us (I like to use these hardcore terms... 🙂 Others avoid using them as maybe they aren't "politically correct", but this is blockchain... 🙂 They are ruling over us!)... We can debate that we are doing the same on HIVE by voting for specific witnesses, which is true, but on the other side, we have another thing to acknowledge...

Hive Is Not Democracy But.jpg
Created in Canva.com

Hive is a decentralized blockchain which should mean that there is no centralized figure that can control the chain, how it develops, how it is configured, etc. That is true and nobody has 51% of all HIVE tokens, but... We do have whales that have a lot of Hive Power which makes their vote "more valuable" than someone else's vote... 1 whale vote who has 1 million HP is more worth than 10000 votes from people who have 90 HivePower... But...

While what I said is true, it doesn't mean that you, with 90 HP (or more, or less) have LESS RIGHTS than the whale with 1M HP! Recently, I have seen a comment from a person who was pointing out exactly that, as a DIFFERENCE in RIGHTS, which is completely unacceptable to do! HIVE is pretty much transparent and everyone can check so many transactions, follow the money, follow written texts, edits, etc. Even if you have 10 HP, you have FULL RIGHTS as anyone else on the chain, from minnows to whales...

You can ask questions, you can debate about things, you can suggest ideas, you can rant, you can call out bad behavior by malicious people, etc. This is YOUR network as much as anyone else... HIVE doesn't have a "ruler", but sometimes, I have to admit that some people think that they are RULERS of HIVE...

Liotes Divider Blue.png

I suppose when money is involved, those "bad tangerines" come out on the surface sometimes... Speaking of money, I would like to touch on another important thing regarding our DHF (Decentralized Hive Fund)... As the name says, it is a "decentralized" fund which means that there is no OWNER of it... But, as in real life, you know the politician's drill... I have built this bridge!, or I will send humanitarian help to that county!, or something similar... While the bridge was built and money went to X country, all those things aren't done by 1 person, and especially not by that 1 politician...

The bridge and the help are paid with taxpayers' money! In the same way, funds inside the DHF aren't money from Jim, Joe, or Tim... It is money of ALL Hivians and everyone should participate in voting for proposals and distribution of those funds... I saw many times people saying, the X guy bought us Hive T-shirts or paid us entrances to an event... No, it wasn't that person, it was all Hivians who did that! It's nice that X person took RESPONSIBILITY to re-distribute funds, but not all the credits go to 1 person...

Liotes Divider Blue.png

Of course, when we get to the situation that people VIEW things in that way, the obvious question arises... Are we still talking about the DECENTRALIZED fund? In decentralized systems, transparency is the MUST... Without it, it's impossible to maintain it for a long time as we people aren't too responsible when money is involved... Transparency keeps us ACCOUNTABLE!

So, what we can do in this "non-democratic" Hive? I would always encourage you to ask questions... There is no stupid question, only stupid answers... If you want to participate more actively in governance, raise your stake, power up more HIVE, make a difference... The DPOS system isn't perfect, but neither are others... Now that we know the rules of the game, we can play by the rules...

But you should never forget that YOU and the richest guy on HIVE have the SAME RIGHTS! You can talk, debate, ask questions...

Thank you for your time,

~ph~

That’s really a great way to put it. Proof of stake governance is completely different from any traditional system we have in place. We have to quit thinking of it that way, I do agree. If someone wants more aid a say so, they need more Hive power, period.

I saw many people complaining about POS, and DPOS on HIVE... and later on, I saw those same people giving away their HP and HIVE to big centralized accounts, making them even bigger... It's like cutting the branch where you are sitting...

Well it has its pros and cons, I will say, but at least it’s better than any of the cosmos chains, lol. The centralization there is ridiculous, 😂

I am not a fan of the 20 block producers, I wish it were more to spread the votes around more, but apparently that’s all the chain needs… I am still a POW guy.

+1 here... There are multiple reasons for being that, but that's another topic... ;)

That is a shame to see someone behaving in that way on Hive, everyone has the same rights, just like in real life.

That usually happens when people get a lot of power undeserving... It comes too quick and it gets the worst out of them... To be a human, you don't have to have a lot of money...

Maybe we have the same rights but perhaps influence matters more on Hive. !lol

Influence does matter on HIVE, but our words, opinions, and ideas should matter a lot more than others' influence...

At least HIVE is not ruled by one-man like X, FB 😄

One man does not rule it, but it would be great if it stays like that... That's why we need to protect transparency, ask questions, and remind ourselves that we have the same rights as anyone else...

I know there are whales in the Hive. There are about 30 of them. They have a lot of HP and very few comments. I don't really care about the whales in the Hive, I care about the killer whales and dolphins.

Hehehehe... That's nicely said... 😃 We don't have to fight, the balance would be enough... Balance, accountability, responsibility...

I know that Orcas can be nasty... 😃

Democracy is the least bad system I know, although it's not perfect either. But transparency is the best characteristic of Hive for me. All is grabbed in the chain. 😉

That's why we have to remind ourselves about it... Transparency is the tool that leads to other good stuff... We don't have that in "real life systems", but we do have it on blockchain...

One thing I love about the hive governance is the fact that no matter the amount of hive power you have, you still have access to some rights on the blockchain

I fully agree with everything you say. I am going to give my humble opinion from common sense because my knowledge of Hive is too basic to understand its intricacies. We are so intoxicated with the reality around us that we do not appreciate that Hive is an attempt to do something different from the imposed reality. A "society" where there is no "owner of everything". Where we can all develop ourselves and help others to develop. Where everything belongs to everyone and we can say and do what we want. That we have the right to say and that our opinion is taken into account and influences decisions. We cannot assume that this belongs to a few. We are all equal in terms of rights in this community. And we must behave as such. Assuming responsibly from the position of each one the role we play in this blockchain. It is true that the whales' vote is more valuable, but their power increases thanks to everyone else, just as their support helps others to grow. You just have to persevere and work hard. In the end the fruits belong to everyone. However, Hive is still far from perfect, but the first thing to do is to change our perception.

Well said! As HIVE is based on a different premise than things in "our dimension", it is exposed to our human nature that always tries to find a wiggle room... We have to think differently to be able to maintain HIVE in the way you described it... What hurts us the most is when people are acting in the same way as corrupted politicians in real life... Power changes a person very fast, and usually, in a bad way...

We have tools to prevent these things and that's why it is important to use those tools... Keep your Hive Power, have your voice, your opinions... if we forward our power to others, we are doing the same as we have been doing for centuries... enslaving ourselves...

Thanks for your comment! I like your view of HIVE!

You are right, I think we all have the same rights, although it could only influence at a certain level as the amount of HP that one holds. But once those small accounts come together, I think they can also be as big as the whale itself, and the influence could also be as big as the whale.

When I have thoughts like yours, I always remind myself that every big improvement in human history wasn't done by the majority, but by the few!!! To win an election you don't have to have the absolute majority, you have to have the majority of ACTIVE people... ;)

Have a great weekend!

We definitely have the same rights because of the POS system we have on hive. If you don't like it, you can grow your account and make more of an impact. It does suck to an extent when the difference is so large though.

It does suck, but if big accounts got their stake in fair circumstances then we can't complain... Everyone can do the same... ;)
Regarding the distribution in general, it's most of the time like that... But every day that passes, the distribution should be better and better...

A person with 90 HP has the same rights but less voice. When an account with 1 million HP does the same thing, it can get much more support. So we need to increase our stake to raise our voice.

I will not deny your words, but even with a small stake, you do have the right to say what you want and what you think... Also, many people don't have "whale status", or even dolphin, but they still have an influence... And to be honest, some of them don't deserve that voice at all... lol... not because of the stake, but because of the attitude...

Of course I agree with you man, I'm sure there are many people who care about Hive and who are not Dolphins, but like I said, people don't see what they write. Otherwise they have the same rights as us, nobody can deny that.

Discussions about Hive governance are always important!

Lies, entitlement, and lack of real accountability are what I hate the most about politicians.

If we want a better ecosystem than the example the political class provides, we need to stay clear of that, at least.

What I can say .... HIVE is funny thing, when very big values come into game, then strange incidents start to happen, ..... someone lies, someone steals, someone runs, someone investigates all this 😄, but when you start looking this all from afar .... you start see also how it brings the platform to life, because the activity has increased.... and new stories start come out what all want read , "HOw did this all happen ? " :)))

Yeah, and that's great for the platform! It's always nice to see the truth coming on the surface and when we can SEE that, we know that, at least, we have more freedom of speech than on other platforms... or in real-life media... where all dirty things are hidden under the rug...

I come from 2017 and have gone through a lot to build 1M hp, this is really difficult and I think a little power is natural for them hehe

It is hard to accumulate 1M, for sure... That gives you some power, of course... But that doesn't give you the power to depreciate others and forbid others to say what they want to say... ;)

I think that it’s A really complicated thing. We can and should aim for more decentralization and proof of things but at the same time, we are running on a model that is a lot different than pretty much any other place on the web. We have a great system, it is indeed got its challenges but it gets a lot of things right. There are people who have bought in and invested a considerable amount of money as well as time and they want to see things for their benefit and sometimes the benefit of others.

Where it gets a little hairy with the notion you are talking on, 90 HP versus a whole lot more. For me it is quite situational dependent. I know people have their reasons but if someone is on hive here for 1+ years but only has 90 hive power give or take some. I in some ways don’t feel bad that their thoughts aren’t taken as seriously. People need to take ownership and invest their assets and that can simply be do not withdraw 99% of your assets that you acquire on here. It should be aimed at 50% or less in my opinion. If someone reinvested 50% of their earnings in the platform and earned 1,000 hive power in a year, it’s much more respectable to listen to someone standing on 500 hive power than it is if they have 50 or 75, just enough to comment and post.

Then it goes into the cumulative effect of it all - where you earn more hive power in the long run by having stake and earning curation rewards and inflation.

For a system filled on all sides with pure centralization and tyranny, we are doing pretty good here on hive!

Yes, we are doing much better than others regarding decentralization, that's for sure... Also, your objection about the bigger stake that gives more influence stands... But... Me having more stake than you doesn't mean that I'm better than you, or that you CAN'T ask me questions if I do some shady things...
I got triggered by that kind of behavior, where the person put himself over the other, trying to shut his mouth by pointing out a smaller stake...

Influence and "weight" of words said by different people is one thing, but basic rights and freedom of speech is everyone's right... As we are promoting HIVE as such, we should at least "keep our word" and prevent abuse of power...

Cheers!!
