Eighteen Years Old But Still A Child.

The world is changing so fast. There are many happenings in the world and if we look closely into it, it is not about the environment alone. It is about the country and the whole world itself. Every part of the world has some actions which are their norms but I feel like the government are regulating some things that are likely to ruin any child out there. I will love to give an instance using a story and also with the background of an African setting.

In Africa, it is generally believed that you are still a child under your parents no matter how old you are. This means that your parents still have a lot of power over you. In some countries, a child is responsible for his actions and can do anything that he likes when he is eighteen years old. Now, Africans adopted that same method. The government regulated it and that is why we see a lot of children misbehave because they feel they are capable of doing anything that they like since they are eighteen years old. Let's go to the story.

There is a pretty little girl who clocked eighteen years old a few days ago. Her parents then gave her the freedom to do anything that she likes. She goes to the club almost all the time and behaves irrationally. At some point, her parents were trying to correct her but she told them that she is eighteen already which means that she can do anything. After a while, she committed a crime with her friends and they all went to jail. If the government had not regulated this and if her parents have not allowed her to do whatever she wants, she might still be living fine and be a very good girl.

There are some little children who just clocked eighteen years old full of bad behaviours like aborting pregnancy and many more. Some of them even lost their lives in the process. We have a lot of them here. Allowing a child to do whatever he likes just because he is eighteen does not seem right to me. Some of these children are still growing. Some of them don't even know what life entails. They are just getting to know what life is about so we should not leave them all alone. This law has done more harm than good.

Some people who are eighteen are not even mentally capable of facing challenges and that is why parents should still guide them. They are still little children no matter how huge they look. I heard that if you beat your child in other countries, you may get arrested. This means that the government officials are really willing your child to be free.

I'm glad it is not like that in Africa. Even if a child can be free at age eighteen here, the parents still have the right to discipline such child when he does something wrong.

This is true. Children whose parents give them free reins at 18 might likely not know what they are doing.

But the scripture did say, train a child in a way he should go, and when he gets old, he won't depart from it.

If parents train their children well, there will be no age limit to the freedom they can be given. No matter how much they wanted to taste the world, the teachings they received at an early age will bring them back to the right path.

In many respects age is just a number. There are a lot of kids who "grow up" really fast and become responsible young adults quickly but there is a large part of our world that is just lazy and unwilling to become contributing adults. We are all a product of our environment so if a kid's environment doesn't have many rules then they likely won't grow up well. It is really a human/parenting issue not so much a cultural one I think.

My grandmother once said that parenting doesn't end even till an adult stage for some people. It feels bad to hear that those tenneage went to jail due to the crime they committed. Parents indeed have lots of work to do inorder to raise responsible children.
Thanks for your participation

It's not advisable to let go of your child at the age of eighteen. The age eighteen comes with a lot of self realization and fullness, but still, some teenagers go ahead to abuse the age.

It's quite sad that the girl and her friends had to go to jail for their wrong deeds but like you said, that wouldn't have happened if her parents put a stop to all her frivolities.

This is so true, parenting doesn't come to an end at any point in time in my opinion, whenever we notice our wards doesn't something wrong, we should be swift to caution them, regardless of their age be it 18 or 60, and that way we'll be living the world in safe hands.

Even before a child clocks eighteen, he or she should have been taught the good and right way so that when they reached that age, they will learn and take to correction things they have learnt while they were young. Leaving a child to do what he or she feels like because of a particular age will make the parents regret not taking things seriously with them.

An 18 year old is given rights that most cannot yet handle. It does not often fare well as the child suddenly has too much freedom and no idea how to handle it. Indeed these young adults still need guidance. Often if their parents were already instrumental in their lives and upbringing - a relationship would continue during this new phase in their development.
