[ESP - ENG] Mi verdad, tu verdad y la verdad. / My truth, your truth, and the truth.

We currently live in a world saturated with information, and we all have diverse opinions based on different sources. When we believe we hold the truth, our certainty vanishes into thin air, yet we cling to our own perspectives, making human communication increasingly complex. How many misunderstandings, arguments, or silent estrangements occur constantly because we defend our reality while the other person does the same from a completely opposite standpoint? To understand the complexity of interpersonal relationships, it is necessary and essential to understand the coexistence of my truth, your truth, and my truth. Recognizing this pattern is what helps us break down the ego, practice empathy, and accept the limitations of our own minds.
How can we define each one:
1- My truth: It is the individual perspective filtered through our own eyes. It is shaped by the sum of our experiences, how we were raised, and often by our culture or moods. It is not always objective, but for those who experience it, it is very real at all times.
2- Your truth: This is the other person’s reality. Just as we each have our own inner world, the other person acts based on their own experiences and conditioning. It represents the opposite interpretation of the same shared situation.
3- The truth: An objective and neutral reality. It is devoid of emotional interpretation, value judgments, or narrative. It would be exactly what a video camera would capture.
Impact on Interpersonal Relationships: Interpersonal conflicts do not always arise from a lack of love, respect, or interest; sometimes they stem from the clash between individual truth and objective truth. When we decide that our truth is the only truth, we treat the other person’s perspective as a lie or an act of aggression.
The Trap of the Ego and the Desire to Be Right: When there’s an argument, the ego tends to prioritize “winning” over “understanding.” People focus on proving that their version of the facts is the only correct one, which automatically casts the other person as being wrong. This turns the conversation into a defensive debate where no one wants to listen and both parties feel misunderstood.
Confirmation bias: The mind tends to seek out evidence that confirms “our truth.” If we think a friend is avoiding us, we’ll interpret this short text message as confirmation of their lack of interest, without considering the possibility that they’re simply having a busy or stressful day.
Learning to identify these three levels allows us to transform disagreements into opportunities for connection. It’s not about giving up what we feel; it’s about understanding that two opposing realities can be felt with the same intensity and validity at the same time.
To improve the quality of our connections in daily life and our interpersonal relationships, we can keep these six fundamental principles in mind:
Separate the facts from the narratives: Don't react to a tense situation; take a moment to separate the cold, hard facts from the story your mind has built around them.
Validate the other person’s experience without necessarily agreeing: Validating does not mean accepting that the other person is objectively right; it means recognizing that their emotional response is real to them. Phrases such as “I can understand why you felt that way from your perspective” or “Thank you for telling me how you experienced this situation” defuse defensiveness and open the door to constructive dialogue.
Practice curiosity instead of judgment: When you see a stance that seems absurd or unfair to you, replace judgment with curiosity. You can ask yourself: What experiences or assumptions lead this person to see things this way? Asking open-ended questions—such as “How did you interpret what I said?”—reveals “their truth” and allows you to clear up misunderstandings without confrontation.
Recognize the limitations of your own perception: Humbly accept that your memory, your emotions, and your biases distort reality. You don’t remember things exactly as they happened, but rather as you processed them emotionally. Accepting that your perspective is just one piece of the puzzle makes you a more mature, flexible, and approachable person.
Seek common ground (The Bridge to Truth): Instead of fighting to have your vision or the other person’s vision prevail, focus on building a shared truth. Integrating “my truth” and “your truth” allows you to access a richer and more complete view of reality. Ask yourselves: “Given how each of us feels, how can we resolve this together?”
Let go of the compulsive need to be right: In most emotional relationships (romantic partnerships, family, friendships), being right rarely leads to happiness or peace. In the midst of a conflict, ask yourself: Do I prefer to be right, or do I prefer to protect the relationship? Letting go of the demand that the other person see the world exactly as you do is one of the greatest acts of love and freedom there is.
Harmonious coexistence does not require uniformity of thought, but rather respect for the diversity of experiences. Objective truth may be unattainable in its entirety due to our human limitations. However, when we show a willingness to honor our own feelings without trampling on those of others, we create a safe space where relationships thrive on the basis of empathy, honesty, and mutual growth.
