Led by Eva Zangerle, a computer scientist at the Austria’s University of Innsbruck, who develops music recommendation algorithms, the researchers investigated the dynamics of English lyrics of Western, popular music over five decades and five genres using a wide range of lyric descriptors, including lyrical complexity, structure, emotion, and popularity.

Researchers analyzed words from more than 12,000 English songs in the rap, country, pop, R&B and rock genres from 1970 to 2020. And it reveals that the emotion described by the lyrics has become angrier, more self-obsessed, and the lyrics have become more personal since 1980. In short, the research finds that song lyrics are becoming simpler and more repetitive. It reveals that especially in pop songs, simplicity and repetition increase more than others. In addition, when the comparison of lyrics views and listening numbers of the lyrics are compared in the research, it is seen that when it comes to the listeners' interest in the lyrics, for example, rock fans mostly enjoy the lyrics of older songs, while country fans are more interested in the lyrics of new songs.

Additionally, Eva Zangerle states that "In each subsequent decade since 1980, there has been a tendency for lyrics across all genres to become simpler and more repetitive, and another thing we are witnessing is a drastic change in the music landscape, - from how music is sold to how music is produced."

I can say that music is everywhere in our daily lives and is an indispensable part of our daily lives, at least for music lovers. Of course, lyrics play an important role when listening to music because sometimes we can turn off a song whose lyrics we do not like in the first 15 seconds, and we can listen to a song whose lyrics we like many times. To be honest, sometimes the lyrics are not even important to me, even though I don't know the language of the song, there are many songs I listen to, so what the music makes me feel is much more important to me. Also, just because the lyrics are simple or repetitive does not mean they are of poor quality. There are some new songs that I like, but the fact is that I think the old songs are much better quality and much more beautiful. I especially like the songs released in the 1970s and 1980s, and I still listen to them and I don't get the same taste from the new songs as I do from the older songs. However, I can't deny that there are some great new songs released and I enjoy listening to them too, but they are not as numerous as before. Finally, I can listen to all kinds of music and what is important to me is that it touches my heart and I really enjoy listening to music. I think even the worst music is better than no music at all.

Music is powerful enough to change lives. Enjoy the music and stay with Love.

Question of the Day : Do you think the lyrics become more simple and more repetitive? Why? If you don't have an answer to this question, You can talk about your favorite song or anything related to music in your comment.

Congratulations @jfang003! Count me in for another round, please! Thank you so very much!

Yes, the trend in songs over the past several decades has definitely been toward simpler, more repetetive lyrics, much to my chagrin. The reason I would say is intentional social engineering, to dumb people down, and to make them easier to manipulate. 😁🙏💚✨🤙

IGN @olaf.gui

Interesting research but not too surprising. I think it matches the general sentiment. I think it is because simple is easier to sell.

Yes. Catchiness and simplicity can have their own appeal and can resonate with listeners.

I think this confirms something most of us have thought. We need a good Prog Rock revival!

Thanks for sharing. I don't think it's such a straight forward answer whether lyrics are getting simpler or not. It depends on the song and artist, but there will always be simple songs and some that are repetitive.
