"The Red Door"
watercolor on paper
30 x 40 cm (11 ⅞" x 15 ¾")

Today I present to you a watercolor painting of a travel memory. I once saw this door on one of the outbuildings of the Château de Chenonceau (Loire valley / France) and for some reason this rather ordinary image stuck with me.

Money-Saving Paint Hack:

For my indelible sketching I much prefer the sensation of a nib on paper over a fineliner. What can I say, I'm an old-fashioned fellow ;-) Since a dip pen is a bit of a pain, I like fountain pens, BUT: everybody and their brother says, they can't be used with drawing ink!

True, traditional shellack inks (India ink, China ink) will hopelessly gum up the capillaries of fountain pens other than tubular drawing pens (e.g. Isograph, the CAD of old) but today's drawing inks are based on acrylics. So I was curious and figured, I buy some dirt cheap fountain pens and see for myself - and it works fine!

The inexpensive fountain pen I settled on is the "Happy Pen" by Pelikan. This pen will run you no more than about $5.00 U.S. and is widely available. The pen is short and fat, which I found to give great control when drawing. I bought a bunch from the Dutch discounter "Action", a fast growing chain which is found in many European countries already.

I'm mentioning Action because they also carry other inexpensive art supplies. To be sure, some are just junk - you get what you pay for - but they have some items that aren't half bad. Markers for example: You can get 48 alcohol- or water-based double-tip markers (brush and felt tip) for about 20.00 EUR, that's less than the well-known Ohuhuh markers and a fraction of the price for Copics.

Ink for Your Fountain Pen:

One of the most reputable manufacturers of drawing ink is Rohrer & Klingner out of Leipzig, Germany. They make SketchINK, a range of 10 inks for fountain pens. While I'm sure this is a great product, there is a premium for the fountain pen aspect, as these inks are supposedly made with special nano pigments.

Since I bought dirt-cheap fountain pens, I figured, I have almost nothing to lose - so I tried their Calligraphy Ink 29700 instead, which is also manufactured to the highest standard. This ink is easier to come by in art retail stores, i.e. saves S&H charges, is about half the price of the SketchINK product, and available in 24 colors including semi-opaque white.

What can I say, the inexpensive (50 ML @ $6.00 U.S.) 29700 series ink works fine in my Pelikan Happy Pens, so I can't see need of spending the extra money on the SketchINK. Plus, I get exactly the colors I like for my sketching, which are sepia, raw umber, burnt siena, and indigo.

To get the ink from the bottle into the fountain pen you could buy a so-called converter, e.g. this one from Faber-Castell. The converter - while convenient - will probably cost more than the Happy Pen.

As always, there is a cheaper hack: Buy a disposable 5 ML syringe with a dull needle at a medical supply store. Open one of the cartridges that came with the pen, suck out the writing ink and flush the cartridge with water using the syringe. Then flush the syringe and use it to fill the cartridge with the drawing ink of your choice. This sounds like a lot of hassle, but it goes a lot quicker than I can explain this, and you don't have to do it very often. Of course, you can reuse the cartridge and the syringe over and over.

90% rubbing alcohol will dissolve dried ink if you make a mess, or if your fountain pen ever clogs up.

Have fun drawing and saving money!
