When a bonsai tree flowers, it is a magical time of the year.

Please enjoy some photos of this bonsai tree from my collection that has recently bloomed.

Known as the Butterfly Bush, this is an invasive tree with long spreading roots and shoots that often form along the trunk and up from the roots. It grows very fast. If properly tamed, it will be a spectacle and a joy to behold when it produces dazzling deep purple flowers.

This tree was pruned in early spring, and pinched a few times to encourage multiple shoots to grow up all around the tree.

In early Summer I stop pinching it, and eventually flower buds start to form in mid-summer. This Butterfly Bush loves to open its indigo violet flowers during the hottest days of the year. This seems to be the time of the year when the most pollinators are active.

My tree was grown from a cutting. In the last house we lived in our neighbor had many wild and flowering invasive trees, and this is one I plucked from one of the branches that was overhanging our fence.

I've always been fascinated by bonsai trees. One thing I discovered is that they require a lot of attention to watering. My success with them has been not very good in the past.

This is a very pretty flower. I was delighted when I saw it because I love purple and I have never seen a Bonsai tree flower before! So it was a double treat. Here in Hawaii Bonsai trees are used to decorate special Japanese style gardens. I look forward to learning more about your group.

You are wondering if a bonsai tree cutting or seeds are more likely to create another miniature tree? No, it does not really work that way. It will become a full sized tree unless planted into a bonsa pot.

Commercial growers spend many generations developing specialtry trees with dwarf qualities. They do this by cross-pollinating from trees with dwarf traits, and watching which seeds germinate to take on this quality the best. They repeat with the next generation. Some of the seeds will always become full-sized trees, even after many generations of selective pollinating. That is why the best trees are usually made into cuttings and grafted. Another difficult process, commonly used on fruit trees.

There is no need to start a bonsai tree from a hybrid pollinated tree. The only purpose is for growing a certain color of leaf or flower on an older root.
