Lemon Citrus: Pair of Young Seedlings. Fruit Tree [Bonsai]

Today I bring photos of a pair of young Citrus tree seedlings. Grown originally from the seeds of Meyers Lemon, this tree will have some traits similar to the parent, and also some recessive traits passed down from its ancestors.

In my experience many trees grown from seed actually benefit one another in small ways when grown close together. Together they can ward off diseases, provide shade to tender young leaves, and work together to improve the quality of the soil (pH, microbes, drainage, compost fertilizer, etc.).

Until the younger one seems to be suffering from the lack of space, I will allow them to continue to coexist in the same pot, as it will add to the character of establishing trunk and branch shapes.

I grow a few different varieties of citrus in my collection. All of them are kept indoors in the winter when the air is freezing. Often times, they will continue to grow indoors. Then in Spring and Summer I bring them outside.

For some reason this year, all of my citrus trees had a late start in the growing season. They weren't finished sleeping off their Winter dormancy. They never started developing leaves until late July when the sun became very hot. Now it is September and they are full of life-giving vigor, developing new leaves and shoots every day.

Sometimes I pluck of the biggest leaves and pinch off the longest shoots. It promotes the growth of smaller leaves and new shoots elsewhere on the branches and trunk.

New buds, which will become stems, usually emerge from the same location where leaves exist (or once existed). In some cases, buds can also form where ever the sap under the bark is especially concentrated. For instance, the hard-pruned edge of a thick branch may form many different suckers around the edge of the cut zone.

These are so gorgeous. I meant to say I caught your evil bonsai analogy yesterday and LOVED it. A quality post! I will keep my citrus ordinary size though... I need lemons and limes!!!
