The unobtrusive bee dress

Holidays are over and the dire life of writing and posting has me back… or wait… I guess its not dire at all, as I love to write and even more to talk with you. And it’s even nicer that two big surprises awaited me: @crosheille is back (hello and so lovely you are back, I am hopping up and down and it is wonderful to have you again) and the @needleworkmonday community got into the @ocd Communities Incubation Program, which means we are one step forward to world domination unlimited fame and money world peace @needleworkmonday being the best community on @hive (pssst... don't tell anybody, it is already the best community).

So far all is more than well, but my sewing, that is another story…
I wanted to come back and tell you a wonderful story about my new coordinated wardrobe, filled with 12 harmonizing pieces of stylish garments. I even wanted to tell you that these garments are mostly made by me. Made with organic fabric in subtle colors, made to last and to serve for every occasion be it job or leisure time, warm or cold weather… I wanted to create a kind of superhero garment collection.

Blau Blaubeeren Food Fact FacebookPost1.png

You noticed the word „wanted“ didn’t you? Because I never made these things. Instead I went into the fabric shop filled to the brim with good intentions and bought this:

Be greedy buy everything31.pngI should have bought the left fabric, but bought the right one

I assure you this is neither a wallpaper for a children’s room, neither a misprint or a mistake with your screens colors. This is the fabrics I bought and yes it shows bees in pink, yellow and sky blue… In my eyes the foundation of every exquisite garment style. 😂🤣🤪

Before I tell you what I made with this fabric accident treasure, I must confess another misbehavior: instead of finally trying to sew a pair of trousers (for example with Tailornova) I bought them. Shame on me. On a headache free day (you see I am preparing you to have pity on me) I went to the next bigger town, happy to finally be outside and without pain, so happy…. that I may have visited Primark which is the epitome of fast fashion. And this visit ended in me buying a pair of trousers which are perhaps not to everybody’s liking and are also perhaps not the most flattering on me, but I loved them, and they fit.

Kopie von old neckline.png

I am so into these trousers which remind me of a modernized eighties style like it is used in „Stranger Things“, „I am not ok with this“ or „Sex education“ (now you also know what I have been watching), trousers which have a wide but tapered leg with two front pleads. The trousers sit unusually high for my liking but so far, I am ok with this (pun intended). I have worn them constantly – which led to a problem. I have experimented with nettle manure (Brennnesseljauche?) on my tomatoes and clever as I am, I have worn my new beige trousers during this process. So, I accidentally added some very stinky green adornments TO THIS NEW PAIR OF TROUSERS WHICH DID NOT WASH OUT (sorry, I was shouting at myself).
Sigh…. What other option did I have than buying another pair :-DDDD

Does not read good in my life cycle assessment. I guess it even reads worse as I not personally bought the trousers but convinced a friend to do it for me (to much headaches on my side). Now comes the interesting part which is no longer a shopping confession. I honestly plan a wardrobe challenge of which I will write in the next weeks. A challenge which will incorporate black trousers as a base garment. So, clever me, I dyed the nettle stained trousers black. Worked wonders on the green blotches:-D

Before I write too much about my wardrobe/style challenge, I will change the topic back to my bee fabric. I made a dress, or better I prepared a dress as in cutting out the fabric. I used the now tried and trusted Tailornova dress pattern.

Kopie von Kopie von Soziale Medien – Design ohne Titel15.png

Again I managed to fumble a whole dress out of 1,40 x 1,40 m fabric. Also again ignoring pattern direction (who says bees cannot fly upside down) and run of thread. In my eyes it kind of worked out, but… I find it stuffy and boring. I would never have anticipated this possible, but the multicolored bee pattern looks boring on me. I already consulted some helpful friends how to remedy this.

Be greedy buy everything35.png
The skirt is only half pinnened into the right length

So far there are these suggestions (hold in mind that I have no fabric left and can use only the scraps which I will cut from the too long skirt):
A belt out of the scraps or a bold color
A Peter Pan collar in pink or blue
A ruffle on the sleeves
Sleeveless
A big fire which will burn my failure into oblivion...

What do you think? What shall I do?

Voted on behalf of Neoxian city paper. Sleeveless does look a better option. Good work there.

THank you so much for the support!!! I think sleeveless it will be as most opted for this. Its only that I have hemmed the inside of the sleeves so meticulously that I have no real motivation to rip them open 😂😱😂

Yea, that is the sad part. I am sure the new look will do justification and make you forget the ripping.

Welcome back!

Maybe some piping along the neck, the waist and where arm + shoulders meet. Perhaps in blue or white - I don't think more yellow or pink would agree with your colors.

The piping idea is lovely. Not sure if I can use it for the waist without ripping the whole dress apart (I am not very motivated to do this...) and hope I will find some fabric that will fit color wise, I fear this will not be easy.

I vote: sleeveless, peter pan collar and belt :)
I think it would benefit from some solid colour with the collar and belt.
I liked the one-you-didn't-buy, I have something similar in a different colourway.
My daughter got my printer working, so I have printed my first pdf pattern - the Love Notions Laundry Day Tee (tunic and dress variations).
I like the beige/black trousers (clever fix there), I had many pairs of trousers like that in the 80s!
So - the Great Wardrobe Challenge!

Ahhhh you all are right, I also think the sleeveless option will be better, but (there is always a ‘but’) I so meticulously finished the inside of the sleeves. I normally only use zig-zag stitch but this time I wanted to be extra neat. SIGH! And I am not sure if I like myself in sleeveless dresses (this will not prevent the sleeves from the ripping).
Also the mono coloured collar and belt (and perhaps the piping for armholes) are a good option. I hope I will find a fabric which will harmonise in collar and stretch. And I also hope motivation will hit me, right now the dress is sleeping in a dark corner 😱
I researched the Laundry tee and this is a lovely lowly shirt for the summer. I like the long sleeve option or the wide short sleeves. Have you decided which option you will choose for sleeves and shirt length? Do you have a fabric? If not I would recommend to buy something I would never buy 😂😂😂😂😂 Simply visualise me and then do the opposite, this will guarantee something wearable 😂🤪 Just that you know, I also liked the first fabric and I still have no idea why I bought the bee fabric....
And yes, wardrobe challenge... again 😂😂😂

If you are not sure, I suggest the collar and belt version first (maybe little matching cuffs/cuff binding or a border on the skirt?) and then see how you feel. Save the sleeveless option for if-all-else-fails.
I have ordered some low-cost fabric from The UK's No 1 Fabric Pound Store to try out the Laundry Day Tee. It's a thin t-shirt knit and has camels (or llamas?) and cactus(es).

Naturally I had to research your shop and they have really inexpensive fabrics (if I calculated it right) Fabrics in “my” shop start around 8 € for 1 m x 1,40 m, most cost more around 15 € but they go up to roughly 30 €. Overall this is cheap for Germany, the other two fabric stores I visited are more expensive. I still dream of the fabric market in Maastricht... the same fabrics as in my neighbor shop (which is a Netherlands brand) but half the price.
I am looking forward to your Llama shirt and hope you managed to glue the pattern together without being bored to death :-D

Yes to @crosheille, yes to @ocd and yes to the best community on HIVE! :D
Welcome back dear!! You are so funny :D I guessed you would choose the bee fabric hehe. But the pants! They look good! And smart way to dye it black. It totally look like a new pair! I would have gone to buy another pair :D
The dress look so cute. I think I would vote for a Peter Pan collar and a belt :D The asymmetrical skirt looks cool too.
Oohh I like your keyboard!

I fear you all know me better than I myself as I honestly was convinced I would go into this store and buy something in grey or nude... 😂😂
The skirt part of the dress is only half pinnend, the back is the longer unhemmed length. But you are giving me ideas about making a longer skirt at the back and a short at the front (I originally wanted to make it all shorter). I also think the dress needs some solid color for the waist and for the collar (and perhaps I will take out the sleeves, although I do not like sleeveless too much on me). I hope I can find a)motivation to go on with the dress and b) a solid coloured fabric that will harmonise...
The keyboard is very flat this helps my fingers (arthrosis problems) Its from apple but I would not recommend it, too expensive and the inscriptions are already vanishing....
Thank you so much for the lovely welcome 💕💕🌈

Hmm, well, I have some suggestions;

  1. Yes for the Belt but not from the fabric scraps but from a one colour fabric, blue, pink or yellow
  2. Also, you can put a band (a line of fabric to the bottom of your dress)
  3. As far as the colar, I am not 100% sure that it would fit

Whatever decision you make, we will wait for IT!

I fear I will wait for my decisions too 🤪😂😂😂 The dress is in the darkest corner of my room right now.
Thank you so much for taking time to help. I think you are right with the belt, one colour would be better. I am now pondering if a bought belt (I have one in red and one in black) would be enough. Also the band at the seam (or as @muscara recommended also at the sleeves and neckline) is a good idea. I hope I will find a fitting fabric in a matching color.

Hello You! Thank you for the welcome back, you know I couldn’t stay away for long who was I fooling. 😂 It’s really great to be back getting back to work on world domination growing our community and it’s support! 😁

I welcome you back from holiday. When I came back the ladies told me you were on holiday so I patiently awaited your return!! It’s great to be commenting on your posts again.

Like @marblely, I too knew you would pick the bee pattern...it’s so you! I love your eye for unique designs and colors. You are so crafty with a true upcycling mind. I don’t think I would have tried dye them, most likely would have purchased another pair of trousers. I like the style of those on you.

Well, looks like you already have plenty of option suggestions to make your dress pop more so I’ll just say I do love how it flows. I’ll be awaiting your decision! 😊

It's so cool that you are back and I hope that this a sign you have a bit more time for yourself. I also hope you and your family are all well during this crisis. My holidays were no real holidays more a repair and relax (I have even worse headaches the last months). We rented a patch of land in Mai and are continually renovating and caring for this to-be garden. On this patch are two old sheds which ere completely rotten and the first action was to build new roofs (we have crazy weather, hot humid and very hard thunderstorms - roofs are needed).
So not much crafting during the writing pause...
ANd with the trousers... they are cotton and the dyeing was super easy. I have never tried it before and was afraid that I will soil the washing machine, but no, all clean 🎉🎉🙏
But the bee dress - sigh - the recommendations are all good and I guess I will go with sleeveless and the solid coloured piping/collar, but my mood to work on this dress is not very high. I have finished all seams meticulously on the inside and have no real motivation to rip it open 😣

Thank you! It’s really nice to be back.
Well...I don’t have more time for myself but I figured out how to make my Hive life work around my here life. I had to step down as a leader in other communities and solely focus on this one. So NWM is the only one I will be highly involved with and working behind the scenes . Also, my personal blog will have to continue a stand still. I won’t have time to keep up my blog as I did before in the past. I may do posts about needlework but that’s going to be the main subject to help keep me focused here. But, it helps that we as authors of the community posts will get beneficiary rewards. So I will still have the opportunity of growing my personal account too :)

My family is doing well during all of this chaos...I like to call it The Twilight Zone because sometimes I feel that’s what we’re in. We’ve been stocking up on necessities, going strong with homeschool and just playing it day by day.

I am sad to hear that your headaches have been worse. I was hoping to hear the opposite. ☹️

Wow that was a smart move...to take on this land for a garden. My family and I have been talking about gardening and we should have gotten one started last Spring. Sounds like you all have a lot of work ahead but definitely worth it.

I’m so glad the dying process was easy and your washer is saved! When you are in the mood the bee dress will get worked on. It’s one of those things where you have to be in the mood to get it done right.

ah sh**, I really hoped the sitaution at home would be a bit less stressful... but to be honest, I can barly imagine how you manage all what you are doing. (I guess I told you this before)
Thankfully the covid situation here is a bit more relaxed and besides the mask wearing in shops or public transport, you can hardly tell something is wrong. I hope it will improve for you fast.

And with the garden: it was such a fortunate find. It is in 700 m distance to our apartent and during the lockdown it was our saviour (remeber we have no balcony nor garden) But it is also a lot of work as it was completly desolate and still is... We are doing our best to fight the brambles, willows and the animals which are eating our vegetables :-DDD

Do you already have some land to work with or are you planning to rent?

Haha tell me about it. I said ya know what, blogging is what was helping me to relax so I’m going to get back to it. I’m glad I did and making those changes it’s not so bad any more. Yes, it has been very different lately with the addition of wearing the masks but thankfully we can deal with it. We have been staying indoors more just to avoid some of the craziness and strange vibes that are going on now. However, we do get the kids out for mini adventures here and there.

That’s so awesome about the garden. So glad you had it when you needed it. Oh I can imagine how much you have to fight off from your food. My parents acquired some land and have given each my sister and brother and I one acre of it. We plan on building there but also here at our current location next Spring ;)
