Winter day in Toggenburg

Read "Winter day in Toggenburg" on TravelFeed.io for the best experience

Switzerland offers countless options for day trips and we make the best out of it. A couple of weeks ago we went to Toggenburg which is one of our favorite regions in the Alps. We stayed close to the Churfisten and explored the surroundings for two days. It was cold, wet and not that much snow yet, but we still enjoyed that. We walked through large fields, thick forests and we got to enjoy beautiful views of majestic mountains. Well, when they were not hidden behind the clouds.

Toggenburg is located in the eastern part of Switzerland. It doesn't matter if you like hiking, mountain biking, swimming or skiing as Toggenburg offers something for everyone. It's one of the most popular places in Switzerland but if you choose the right time of the year you can enjoy amazing nature without many tourists around you. We went there between the summer and the winter season and we didn't come across anyone during our several hours long hike.

It is also well known for its Toggenburg Mountain Tour trail which is a total of 87 kilometers going from Wildhaus to Wil. We haven't done this one yet.

Toggenburg has a total of 20 sign-posted routes, each between 13 and 44 kilometers long, and there are also some mountain lakes you can hike to. Some of them are the Gräppelensee, the Schönenbodensee and the Schwendi lakes.

Let's have a look around!

We didn't even feel like leaving our room as it had such an amazing view of Churfisten. But our active spirit won over our laziness, and we put on our scarves, gloves and caps and went outside.

1.jpg

We planned this trip in advance as we haven't been in that particular part of Toggenburg before and we were not sure about the signs, so we even took our map with us. At the end it was not needed because we could see some peaks that we recognized which helped us with the orientation.

DSC_7515.jpg

The weather was changing quickly, and we had all seasons of the year in one day. The sun was shining, then it was raining, we also had fog and later in the afternoon it was snowing as well.

DSC_7529.jpg

I like the first snow as the country keeps its other colors as well. You can see some snow, some green, even blue in the sky. It was a beautiful view.

DSC_7541.jpg

I've traveled across many countries but only in Switzerland I saw many lonely farms built so high in the mountains. I wonder how it is to live in a house like this. I can imagine that your priorities here are very different. I think that they spend all summer preserving their food in case that the road would be closed due to the snow in the winter. And that happens regularly. Once, we also had to turn around on the road as it was closed, and we couldn't continue.

DSC_7549.jpg

Imagine how it feels when you are above these clouds. It must look like the country was drown in a whipped cream from above 😊

DSC_7558.jpg

You might have noticed that I like taking photos of nature wonders. You could argue that these aren't wonders but if you think about how complicated is everything what happens in nature then you realize that these are indeed wonders. And here are a couple of them.

DSC_7559.jpg

The snow was melting already and it created a nice effect on the tree.

DSC_7561.jpg

Just a few hundred meters away, on the sunny side of the hill, there was no snow anymore. It was also much warmer there and we stayed there for a few minutes to warm up and dry our shoes.

DSC_7567.jpg

We were coming from the woods to the fields all the time. We didn't enjoy walking in the woods as the snow was melting and it was like a cold rain falling on us.

DSC_7573.jpg

Here we have a picturesque abandoned hut surrounded by nature.

DSC_7592.jpg

And another one... Look at that wavy ground - beautiful but not very comfortable for hiking.

DSC_7595.jpg

The view from the cottage to the other side. Many people ask me if I prefer mountains or sea. I always say that mountains are deeply in my heart and this is why.

DSC_7604.jpg

We realized that we should hurry up as the sun was going down but we preferred the experience and went to a nearby village for a cup of tea.

DSC_7610.jpg

And here is that village. I don't even know if it's a real village, but I couldn't find another word for it. It was very quiet, and I guess that these houses are mainly used during the skiing season. I was surprised that there was an open restaurant. We were of course the only guests there 😊

DSC_7631.jpg

I guess that you wouldn't mind such a view, would you?

DSC_7644.jpg

We also made some new friends. They were so curious! When we came there was just one of them outside but they kept coming. I wish we had some apples for them...

DSC_7669.jpg

The weather was getting better and we were sad that we had to go back...

DSC_7685.jpg

We were lucky to enjoy the sun all the way back to the hotel. We came right on time for dinner and then we went directly to bed as there was not much to do in the evening and we were too tired after such a long day outside.

DSC_7688.jpg

I hope that you had a great start of the year! I'm still at home with my family hoping that the weather will get better in the next couple of days.

Thank you for reading!

Cheers!

Martina

Happy new year Martina!!

I thought there would be much more snow in the mountains in Switzerland at this time of the year. Is this normal or are you expecting a late winter? Either way, it looks like a beautiful walk!

All the best for 2020.

Happy new year Pauline!!!

We were at around 1000 m above the sea level and that is a little bit too early for much snow at that level. There is a lot of snow deep in the mountains and it's snowing all the time right now, so soon there will be loads everywhere :)

I wish you a much better year than the last one! Hope you're doing well!

I love how far away you can see in the landscapes. That's my favorite kind of scenery. It's always so humbling when I meet such a sight. I just stand there in awe and wish I could stay forever contemplating such depth.

Exactly. I also enjoy such views. And I'm lucky to live nearby, so I can go there almost every week :)

Thank you for stopping by!

Wait, what! Oh man, I really want to live there too hahaha. All I have is an enormous mountain near my home. I mean, I love the sight! But it's only one mountain. It's really cool when I'm on the cable bus going up and looking down, or when I'm on the highway and seeing all the different tones and reliefs each area has, but there's so much more variety in your landscapes! It reminds me of Mérida in Venezuela, the Páramo in Mérida is absolutely gorgeous and similarly structured in some places.

Having just one mountain can be a little boring after a while :) We have so many hills and mountains here. I also live on a hill and the view from our apartment is perfect. We see the valley and other hills surrounding it. When the weather is good we can also see the range of Alps. It's pretty amazing.

I haven't been to Venezuela yet but South America has been on my list for such a long time. Will have to realize it one day :)

Would be cool. I also enjoy very much travelling in Venezuela. So many beautiful places. Even though I live here, I still feel awe when I visit some places.

By the way, I checked your blog plantfuljourney.com and I saw that it's made on wordpress.com. Is it profitable? How customisable is it? I've considered it before but never thought of it as an option, first time I see a blog hosted there.

Travelfeed also has a nice interface! Any pros of using it? Is their token worth something?

Sorry if I mention profit too much haha, I'm looking for alternatives to my current setup.

I'm traveling and don't really have time to answer properly right now. I will get back to you either on Sunday or at the beginning of the next week :)

Have a good Friday and a great weekend!

Sorry for getting back to you this late.. but better later than never :)

I've read somewhere that there are around 80 Mio blogs hosted by wordpress but it might not be the correct information, no idea. What I know is that actually most of my blogger friends use it. You can choose from various packages. You can also go for free but then you will have the worpress.com at the end of your blog name which I didn't like. These packages are very versatile and they would suit every need but they are expensive. You pay quite a lot for a year. So it's important to think about what you want to do with your blog. I have the business version as I keep it because I want to build a professional business website and it's quite easy. The negative side of taking the free version is that you won't get any plugins, so you could only post blogs but you can't for example send a newsletter to your followers, or have the contact me button or any other feature, it would just be a blog. There is no crypto that you would be earning. You can earn on ads or if you get a commission from a company but to earn on ads you needs so much traffic that it's possible only for huge blogs.

Travelfeed doesn't have their own token yet, so you simply earn Steem. It's a nice interface, you can schedule your blogs, there is a map added, so you don't have to add the link manually to your post and it actually works like Steempeak. They have now quite a few new features, so it becomes a great interface to use. The only issue is that if you check the post on any other frontend you will notice that it will be a few links to travelfeed. I know that some people don't like it. I don't mind..

I hope that I've answered all your questions :) If you have anything else, just let me know. I'll be happy to help! :)

Hi @delishtreats … I certainly remember those magnificent views from your neck of the woods, and I thank you for bringing them back to mind more vividly with the wonderful photos in your posts.

I've been away from steemit a couple of months, busying myself with other stuff. Sorry I dropped out of sight :>(

Have a healthy and peaceful New Year.

Ciao

Have an amazing New Year! May it be much better than the last one :)

Hi @delishtreats

I was thinking about you a few weeks ago but didn't want to bother you as I was not sure what you were up to.

Thank you for having thought of me; I'm well, was just busy with other writing projects of which I do sometimes :>)

I too think of you when you're away from the platform at times, but realize you have a life to attend to elsewhere.

So nice to hear from you and I wish for a very healthy and happy New Year for you and your family.

Ciao

Howdy Martina! wow and wow, that countryside is amazing. I could study those views all day long! I'd love to live in one of those mountain farm houses and get snowed in for a few days or weeks! Tremendous photography and a wonderful job as always!

Hey Janton! What have you been up to and how have you been?

Yes I'm still on the Steemmonster game and I haven't been up to much other than that. I don't see too many posts these days, but I always like to see Martina's (they are always great). I saw you in the comments and wanted to say "hi" to you too. I hope that you had an awesome holiday season and I'm glad you are still around :)

Howdy again sir davemccoy! Yes, Martina's posts are works of art. lol.

I'm still here..my goal was to reach rep70 and Dolphin status and then back off and spend more time on other things. I got one accomplished but it'll be a few months before I hit the Dolphin level.

But Mrs. J is not thrilled. The price of steem needs to rise. What is your prognosis?

With cryptos rising this year with Bitcoin's halvening and the altcoins supposedly following and all the institutional money starting to flow into the crypto market and big banks and Wall Street getting involved things look promising for altcoins generally but I don't like how low Steem is usually ranked.

Does Steem have what the investors are looking for? I'm already spending alot less time on here because I'm working on projects around our property but Mrs. J would be happy if I left Steemit completely. Let me know what you're thinking, I trust you.

Hahaha, I bet you'd love it :) But I think it's no fun when it really happens. Can you imagine craving something and not being able to get it? :D

Thank you for stopping by, cowboy! I hope you're doing well and I promise to be a better friend and go through your posts too! I've been busy with the family for the last almost 3 weeks and will be finally back in Switzerland on Sunday, so I will have a little bit more time :)

Howdy today Martina! Well I was thinking of the solitude of being snowed in but I guess it would be a little inconvenient too. I have been snowed in by myself for weeks out in the country before and it was really rough but I also enjoyed it!

I bet it's going to be so good to get back home for you guys! I know you are very busy so don't worry about missing my 2-bit posts. lol.

In which country? Are you living in Texas? I thought it's kind of a desert :D

We are not at the airport and should be boarding in an hour. I can't wait to be back home :)

Howdy tonight Martina! By now you are relaxing and enjoying home! I was in Kansas when I was marooned in several different blizzards that lasted for days and I was shut off from phones and electricity for weeks. Luckily I had natural gas heat.

I do live in Texas now but most of Texas is lush and green with thick forests and woods or else green pasture land, only the Western 4th of the state is desert like.

Yay! Thank you! It's not that easy to miss my posts as I don't post that often, so you would have to be out for a long time not to notice it :)
