Dragon Fruit Porridge with Oats

20260629_110957.jpg

Dragon fruit has been plentiful in our area lately and is being sold at prices well below expectations—usually IDR 20,000 to 30,000 per kilo, but today it’s selling for IDR 10,000. It’s so cheap that I bought a few kilos yesterday, specifically to stock up and eat right away. However, I had an interesting idea for turning these dragon fruits into a delicious dish: making them into porridge.

Porridge has always been a super quick breakfast option in my opinion—whether savory or sweet, I think both are perfect. This time, I made porridge by combining oats and dragon fruit. The final result was absolutely delightful, with the dragon fruit’s vibrant color and authentic flavor.

I intentionally made this porridge by mixing oats, dragon fruit, and coconut milk. A little granulated sugar and salt as seasoning make it absolutely delicious. At first, I was a bit skeptical about the result, but after trying it—who would’ve thought it would actually taste that good? It’s perfect.

So, for those of you looking for a new twist on dragon fruit, check out the recipe below.

Ingredients

1 dragon fruit
5 tablespoons oats
1 tablespoon granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
¼ teaspoon salt
500 ml fresh coconut milk

Cooking Procedure

Cut the dragon fruit in half, remove the skin, and mash it with a fork. Then set aside a small amount for the topping.

In a saucepan, combine the oats and dragon fruit and stir until they’re evenly mixed. Then don’t forget to add a little granulated sugar and salt—you can substitute these with vegan honey or palm sugar.

Add the coconut milk while stirring. As for the coconut milk itself, try to use fresh coconut milk so it tastes richer. However, if coconut milk is hard to find in your country, you might try substituting it with vegan milk.

Then cook it on the stove while stirring over low heat, because it’s very prone to burning as it will thicken later on.

Result

Look at the result—it’s absolutely delicious. I added a few pieces of dragon fruit on top; if you have almonds, you can add those too, or chocolate—just customize it to your taste. The final result is perfect, with a blend of flavors that works so well together.

It’s savory, sweet, and incredibly creamy—a real treat to enjoy in the morning for breakfast, or you can even make it part of a diet plan. However, don’t add sugar to get the best results. Trust me, it tastes amazing, and I’m sure everyone will love it, especially since the oats help you feel full faster.

Choose large, fully ripe fruits—that’s how you’ll get the true taste of dragon fruit. It’s sweet and absolutely delicious.

The small ones, which are usually sold at a low price like the ones I’m using here, really don’t have much flavor at all. That’s why I usually use them to make other, more delicious dishes.
